When you are roe or larger deer hunting, what do you consider your comfortable maximum range when using a decent front rest? We don't have roe, so it would be Fallow sized, mine is around 200yds, maybe a little less. I put 150yds' capt david

I always stalk as close as I can until it's literally at the point where the deer 'should' notice me (mostly sub 25yds as I love to hunt with Irons)..however, I have voted 250 as that's my max range based on my MPBR and I would in no circumstances ever wish to shoot at animals any further than that for a multitude of reasons I'm not going to go into.

250 for roe is a long shot, these are dainty little animals, and the vitals zone isn't big! I've taken roe off quad sticks at 240m, but I never felt in any way good about it or that it was sporting or hunting..I've shot reds at that range and further and never enjoyed it either.

unless people are culling deer for management purposes, I really don't see why anyone should need to take long shots...I understand stalking scenario's vary, and some places aren't accessible or getting too close to the deer is virtually impossible without spooking them,,but I do believe that out of respect for the animals, people should try the damn hardest they can to get as close as possible; reason being very simple, the closer you are, the less variables come into play, that's a no brainer...unless of course, you have a perfect rest prone at 200, but would have to shoot off sticks if you stalked into the deer at 125,,then I'd say the shot at 200 would be the most ethical simply due to the rest you have available.

as for total shot distance, I'm into stalking not shooting at deer, so I the thought of anything past the number 200 makes me uncomfortable as A. there's a lot that can go wrong further out, and B..you can't convince me that in the UK you can't get to the 200's,,we're not in NZ shooting goats across canyons...lets be honest about that one ;-)

150. On paper I'd go a lot further quite happily, but I'd need a very good reason to be stretching out towards 200 on deer.

Though I'll happily take foxes out to 300 or so. So my morals are obviously flexible !

I tend to keep head shots with the .22 Hornet to under 100M. Ditto a 35g V-Max to the engine room when that slightly facing away head shot is not on and calls for a far better Marksmen than yours truly.

Too many variables.

Have you got a cull number to hit or are you stalking for sport? Is it Red or is it Roe? There's a big difference. Is it still or is it windy? What chambering are you using? How experienced are you? How accurate is your rifle? Is it a mercy shot or is it a healthy beast?

My average range on the red hinds this year when we had a job to do in still conditions was 197 meters. Furthest normal shot was 300 meters, furthest mercy shot (sika calf having just shot hind) 360 meters. My average on the Roe so far this year where there is no pressure on numbers is 74 meters.

You can't have a blanket max range, it all depends on the circumstances.
