The series describes them as Marland SIKA deer, which the states has issues with. They are seen as an invasive species, being managed by fish and game. The large amount of widespread Sika are animals from private collections which have escaped. Lots of info on the states SIKA deer if you dig In to it.

sika on east coast imported from uk, living in a marsh on E side of Chesapeake bay. Sitka (black tailed) Pacific north west. Watch the series 8 episodes for Sika (bow hunting and muzzle loaders) previous seasons have covered Sitka.

well worth the watch, even the cooking bits are interesting.

Categorically, absolutely and without question Sika - Cervus Nippon. Nothing at all to do with black tail Sitka.
I did think that they looked like quite small examples though. During the porgramme it specifically stated that they were imported from the UK and released on an island. They then swam ashore. Clearly they learned from the ones released on Brownsea Island.

What I like about the 'Meat Eater' series is that it also shows bad shots, wounded animals, long follow-ups, missed opportunities and schoolboy errors. Just like in real hunting then, when not everything always goes to plan.
What I don't like is the questionable practise of gralloching with bare hands and the often disastrous shot placement, in particular with Bow hunting, which appear to be more acceptable in the USA than it is over here.
Having only gralloched a few deer, every time with gloves on btw but just for convenience. Whats the big issue with bare hands?

It doesn't accord with best practice, as defined by the various organisations and courses, for fear of contamination in either direction (human to deer, or deer to human (or indeed deer to deer when several beasts are shot)). However, what happens in a sunny English meadow and what happens on a vertiginous Scottish hillside are not always the same. I generally wash my hands in a burn and dry them on my breeks afterwards if that helps...

Being a modern eco friendly sort of person I'm a bare-hander ;) and knowing the impact plastics and such like have on our environment then I think we should all go bare handed in future......

If this series is anything like the previous ones, it'll be worth a watch. Always interesting to see a good variety of hunting quarry, techniques and locations

Been a huge fan for sometime. Well what I really mean is - dead jealous. After thrashing around all weekend up on our shoot and missing with the only shot I got, I was ready for watching someone more successful.

Mind you I wasn't quite so sure about the recent one where he shoots a mountain lion up a tree. Whilst they did eat it, there didn't seem to be any justification made in the film as to why they shot it in the first place.
