Meopta repair- this should be interesting

I've always loved Meopta Optics. Superb quality and excellent value for money. I've got several of their scopes and a pair of binos.

A year or so ago one of my scopes had an issue with focus around the reticle. It looked like there were bubbles around the centre of the crosshairs, so I sent it to Viking Arms, who were the sole importer at the time, and they told me they'd send it to Meopta for assessment. Long story short, Viking took months to send it, and Meopta took months to repair and return it. The repair was great and not as expensive as I first thought it might be, but the time delay was extremely frustrating.

Recently I dropped my binos. Sod's law dictated that they landed on a stone and chipped the right ocular lens. I'd already scratched the coating on the front objective lens so it was time to have them sorted. Viking Arms no longer deal with Meopta, so I rang round a number of binocular repair places, all of whom told me that they could repair the binos but couldn't source the lenses required.

An email to Meopta and they told me to send them to them direct. I dug out the box and parcelled them up. Parcelforce costs to Czech Republic were reasonable, just over fifteen quid, but I always pay for insurance to full value and online prices for the binos are around £1000. The insurance was a whopping £32. So I swallowed hard and bought the service online. An hour or so later I was scratching my head looking up Meopta's VAT and EORI numbers for the Customs declaration, trying to find the export tariff code for used broken binoculars, answering emails from Parcelforce worried that I was trying to export an item valued at £1000, modifying a plastic bag to enclose the three different customs declarations plus the commercial invoices for this export experience.

The parcel was dropped off at the post office yesterday. Simple process? Yeah right. But we've got our blue passports back haven't we!

Thinking of running a sweepstake to see how long it all takes. I'm not holding my breath.

I was going to send a scope to Schmidt and Bender and gave up for this reason. Even they advised me to wait a few months before trying.

I recently bought some knives from a company in Finland who are UK VAT registered, so customs cleared. The goods took several days to go overland through Finland and Denmark and then across the North Sea and were delivered two days after being docked in the UK. Delivery to me was just like normal internal stuff. The company had obviously thought through Brexit.

Good luck with the repair, I suspect it might ge smoother than your previous experience.

Your mistake was using Parcelforce
DHL/UPS/Fedex are much easier to deal with.
You won't need the receiver VAT and/or EORI number, nor the tariff code - just an invoice stating the goods are being temporarily exported for repair

Cheers

I've bought two pairs of Miendl boots from a form in Germany, absolutely no problems and both pairs arrived on my doorstep within 7 days.

I did get my new blue passport issued and sent to me in Germany in record time over the last two weeks, Don't like the thing, it feels on the outside cover nothing like my original blues from way back.
Progress Bah!! but at least I can travel again, but only when the power driven bureaucrats all over the world loosen the noose.

I had a similar going on with Viking . Had my ZD replaced twice, the first wouldn't parallax, the second one's elevation turret failed. I get that I may have been unlucky , but ,the customer support from Viking was shocking .
Apparently they used to do the returns in batches . My first return sat on a shelf for 3 months awaiting repair , after telling me it would be replaced . It was eventually replaced .

If you're dealing with Meopta directly my guess would be 6 weeks .

It took a couple of goes to get a reply, but I was contacted by Jaroslav Dosedel. He’s been very helpful. I was intrigued to see he is head of global sales.....

All he asked was that I send the Binos with a note marked SERVICE and a description of the problem, together with contact details.

Are you making a warranty claim? If so the current importer is RUAG. I’ll PM you Jaroslav’s email.

Ruag Ammotec UK are now the Meopta distributor in the UK I believe so why don't you send it to them to deal with it?

They used to have the Kahles distribution. When I had a problem with 2 of their scopes they sent them back to Austria for repair and turned them around in about 3 weeks.

Always had stellar service from Ruag.

Because it's accidental damage, not a warranty repair. It would take Parcelforce two or three days to deliver them to RUAG, who will simply send them to Prerov, which will take another however many days. RUAG have no commercial interest in the transaction, and will charge me for the service. Meopta will repair and charge for doing so, and send them back to RUAG, who will then send them back to me, no doubt charging me for the cost of doing so. So I end up paying for four lots of postage, and add potentially two further weeks to the waiting time.

Sending equipment to Europe (from UK) for repair is a nightmare, especially with UPS. Even though the paperwork states it is being returned for repair you will still pay VAT and duties on the customs value of the item when it is returned.

The parcel could be held at the customs warehouse for weeks.

I currently have a riflescope coming back to the UK after warranty repair in Germany. UPS have held it for 2 weeks and are stating that it is a firearm and that I need to show them an FAC before they will release it !!!!!

So, an update!

I've finally got my binos back. Absolutely brilliant repair, and what's more they've managed to clean off the blood from the outer casing (they look like new!)

Here's what happened in the process. I posted them parcelforce on 24 March.
The tracking shows they were sent from the International Hub on 26 March.

They arrived at Czech customs on 2 April.
They spent 10 days awaiting clearance and were delivered to Meopta on 14th April.

On 22 April I emailed Meopta to confirm they had received them and was given the email details of their service manager. She contacted me to say they would be assessed for repair and I would be contacted with a result.

On 23 April I was told the binos had been assessed and told they would repair and re-gas them. They confirmed this was not a warranty claim and that they would contact me with an invoice once the repair was completed and checked. The cost of the repair was £165 and the shipping and customs clearance would be £45. No more or less than I expected.

On 17 May I was told the binos were in repair dept.

On 20 May I received and paid the invoice for the repair and shipping and was told they would be dispatched in the very near future.

I received TNT tracking info telling me they would be delivered on 1 June, and they arrived this morning.

All in all it's taken just under ten weeks. Given the time spent in transit and customs I suppose it's not bad. Good job they're fantastic binos......!!!!

The communication with Meopta has been simple and although I've had to do a bit of prompting for updates they have delivered as promised.
