Mil surp altbergs

Yep, they're good boots. I've had mine for ages and had no issues. There are those who say they aren't really Altbergs, they're just using the name, but I've seen no evidence of this, nor do I know how they think that would work in litigious Britain.
The boots sit around the middle of the scale weight-wise; I'd call them a 3-season boot. Not as light as a pair of jungle boots, but nowhere near as heavy as a pair of Haix cold weather boots. I'd say they're pretty good for most of the UK most of the time; I wouldn't wear them in the Highlands in deep winter, and they'd be a bit sweaty on a hot summer day down south, but otherwise good for the remaining 95% of the year.
I also use Meindl Burmas, which are awesome but a bit heavier tha the Altbergs. Perhaps a lighter model would
besomething like the Durban boot.
Hope that helps.

I bought a pair of ex mil leather Altbergs and they were as new.
The first day I wore them in wet grass to see how well they fared, very pleased with them when wearing.
Took them off when I got home and found a wet shape the same as the shape of the stitching around the tongue, oh dear.
I took the laces out, exposed the tongue stitching and put a good layer of Leder Gris around the stitching, only used that because I had some, I could have used any sort of polish or dubbin I suppose but that was most handy.
As a result of that I now have a pair of comfortable, water tight boots.
Best £58 I ever spent and have been told they can sometimes be got for less.

Thanks for your replies gents they sound great for my permissions the majority are farmland in Lincoln / Yorkshire so should suit me fine , just picked up a pair for 40 quid on eBay so we will see !
Thanks again

I have a black pair of Altbergs mil surplus boots. I'm not sure exactly which model they are, but they look a lot like those defenders. I got them off eBay, brand new in the box. The ones I have don't have a goretex lining, but are still waterproof. Mine cost 60 quid, which is £140 less than the High Country Velthogs that I got direct from Altberg.

excellent boots, got two pairs so when one pair wet I can leave them to dry the next day. Leder Gris works well on proofing them, so they stay pretty waterproof, but I wear a pair of mil surp sealskins socks underneath for added dry comfort.

For the money I have not bought better boots but I always have to buy a size up from the my normal boot size to get a good fit.

Hi, I use Alt-Bergs as my winter boots, they work for me, and at the price they are worth taking a chance on to see if they work for you. They come in different width fittings so make sure you get the right boot. I wear mine with sealskin waterproof socks and that combination works great (for me!)

They are good boots, they seem to need a bit more looking after (leader Gris) than other boots I have had.

As was said early on, I can confirm the mil issue Defender ones are not the same as ones you'd get from the Altberg factory if you went and bought them - my wife had 2 pairs fitted from the factory, then got the issue ones, same size and style but a different weight to them and the issue ones are, apparently, not as comfy. Maybe different materials used to keep the price down for the MoD.

I have the issue Altbergs, curtessy of man at Q & M. I also have an older pair of Altberg Field & Fell. The issue boots aren't in the same league. You get damp feet from wet grass, and the colour wears out of the toe when walking through wet grass.
When I go to exchange the ones I've got now, I'll ask for Haix.

The Haix gore Tex cold weather are very good. The standard high liability, not so - similar league to the altbergs.
