MOA v's MRAD scopes.

Hi all,
up till now all my scopes have been MOA so thats all i know, just been and bought a new hawke sidewinder and asked for one in MOA, go home to find it is in MRAD, called the shop and he said its all he has so i thought id look into the MRAD adjustments, read a few things, watched a couple of videos and i just cant get my head reoubd it, dont know if im reading the wrong things or watching the wrong videos, any one have an idiots guide.
with my hmr zeroed at 100 yards, if i wanted to shoot out to 200 yards i know its a 8 1/2" drop so a 17 click adjustment, but with MRAD i wouldnt have a clue, PLEASE HELP

Do you have strelok? You could input the scope detail in their and get your firing solution in seconds.

It's simply a differing unit of measure, cm over inches.

1/4 moa = 1/4 of an inch (1moa = 1inch)
1/10th mil = 1cm @100m (1mil = 10cm)

The difference is to give the user a finer amount of adjustment.

At least this is my sleep deprived understanding lol

My advice...use strelok and let it do the work for you lol

I ditched all of my MOA scopes years ago. MRAD all the way for me .
It’s very easy to use , give it a try
It’s also very easy to range find using your recital ( as long as there matched of course)

8.5in drop at 200. 8.5*2.54 = 21.6cm. 1 click =2cm at 200m, so 22 (rounded)/2 = 11 clicks or 1.1MRAD/MIL


Just to say, decimal is easier to calculate. My tuppenny worth - don't mix your scopes - you'll get in a right pickle!

There are 3.438 moa per mil so if you want to shoot out to 200yds you need to dial 1.2 mils.

thanks chaps, that doesnt sound to bad for me to get my head round, 1 click = 1cm, 1 mil = 10cm, sounds easy enough,

StrelokPro is a little opaque at first but you soon get used to it is very useful

I used MOA for 25 years, so was very slow to try MILs. Once I started to use MIL scopes / reticles, I decided I like MILs better. Shooting out to 500 meters, dialing 3 mil is a lot easier than dialing 10 moa. If you are using an app like Strelok its very easy to use.

If you can work in metres and centimetres rather than yards and inches, MRAD becomes a piece of ****.
1/10 mil = 1cm at 100m
If you normally zero at 100 yards, move the target back to 100m and use a piece of paper with a 1cm grid
Then 1 click equals 1 box on the grid

iv come to the conclusion of why fix whats not broken and sticking to MOA, i will just take the scope back, all i was after was a scope with tactical turrets and return to zero to replace my hawke vantage 4-16X44, was only looking at the hawke as there good with the pard,

It's best to stick to what you know. If you are starting from scratch then metric is easier on the brain.

I had a problem a few years ago and still to this day. I have always worked in moa but was given rfbinos that only worked in metric. At first I was coverting metres into yards when shooting beyond mpr. This was taxing on the old brain. So now I work on the mixed race system, measure range in metres and know the corresponding moa scope adjustment for that range. Not ideal but it's workable

There’s literally nothing to be confused about. It’s just metric vs imperial. Metres and centimetres. 1 click moves the crosshairs 1cm. Simple!

I think all my scopes are now MRAD. Not consciously either. If I like the glass, ret and adjustments I go for it.

Recently picked up a FFP Helix and that has everything for me. Matching ret and turrets, positive clicks, good ret design, glass seems reasonable. Didn’t matter whether it was MOA or MRAD.

Coming from the metric side I even apply the metric system to MOA scopes. 1/4 MOA click approximates to 0.7cm at 100m.
So I don‘t really care if a scope is MOA or MRAD.
The only thing I react allergically to is if there‘s a ballistic reticle with MOA markings and MRAD turrets or vice versa.

I am old enough that I see everything in inches. I have lived with MOA scopes for so long that I think of things in minutes of angle and the math comes to my head without any effort. This has made it harder to embrace mils. My friends call me stubborn but screw em. ~Muir
