brian is correct, last time we went easyjet were not sure about the ammo so suggested we paid extra (they would wouldn't they), when we went to check in ,it was chaos, no one knew or cared about the ammo, so we all paid extra for nothing. For this trip I have got all the relevent info and it states that "ammo can be stored in the rifle case in a secure box"
Yes you can share a rifle case to half the cost, but be warned do not let albert near it, as I found out to my cost:doh:

Oh bliss, just found this in the EasyJet T's & C's,

Firearms and explosives
such as handguns, automatic weapons, munitions, ammunitions including blank cartridges, pistol caps, fireworks, flares, smoke canisters and crackers. Exception: Firearms and ammunition for hunting and sporting purposes may be accepted as Checked Baggage. Weapons such as antique firearms, swords, knives and similar items may be accepted as Checked Baggage. A maximum of 5kgs of ammunition (UN0012 or UN0014) may be carried in Checked Baggage with appropriate paperwork, subject to available space, if declared at check-in and must be unloaded with the safety catch on and securely boxed or packaged. Only one gun per piece of Checked Baggage will be accepted for carriage (i.e. multiple guns must be packed separately). Please note ammunition must be packed as part of the Passenger’s Checked Baggage and may be packed with firearms, providing it is securely boxed. Passengers travelling with firearms must go to the Bag Drop Desk at least 90 minutes prior to the scheduled time of departure. The carriage of firearms is strictly limited. Passengers must produce valid documentation showing proof of ownership and legal authority for the possession of the firearm(s). Without such documentation, firearms WILL NOT be carried.

I'd be prepared to pay extra for taking two rifles, but really don't want to be trying to carry two gun cases, plus normal luggage !!! I'm trying to think of one good reason for this, and can't come up with one ?

Also,

Do not confuse Checked Baggage with item of luggage.
At Luton two years ago they told us to put our ammo "cashboxes" into our suitcase.

Returning from Lisbon they wanted it separate. Boghossian will tell you what happens if you just ignore that :)

Hmm, it sounds like it may be worth taking a printed screen shot of their T's & C's, so the staff can see what has been requested.

Also, will they accept the listing of a firearm, and serial number on both an FAC, & the firearms passport, as proof of ownership, because strictly speaking, it isn't !

Lateral,

Most airlines use the same language. What it means is that you have a checked in "suitcase" plus your checked in Rifle case plus a checked in ammo case. Three items. Now, if your airline charges by the item then that mounts up.

What one airport does is nothing to do with the airline. At Luton the airport will allow ammo boxes to be put inside suitcase. At Lisbon the local Police want it separate.
At Heathrow you have your ammo case separate going out but coming back from Sofia it must be inside your suitcase.

Some airports put rifles on the carousel, others take them to customs.
You just have to be prepared for three items of checked luggage and you might be lucky to drop down to two.

Stan

So there's a disparity between the airline, airport, & local police. It's easy enough to either have your ammunition in the luggage, or separate, so long as you take it in a small lockable cash box, or similar, but it would be nigh on impossible to get a lockable box to fit into a gun case, unless it had been made to accept it ?

I can deal with anything, well mostly, if I know what's expected, which is why this conversation is good. It would be good to get some more feed back from other people who have traveled with EJ. I have emailed them for confirmation, because I can't see the logic of wanting you to increase the weight, and volume for no reason. If they want to charge double, just charge double !

We usually fly from London with the Portuguese flag carrier TAP when hunting in Portugal - guns are carried free as sporting baggage and it's pretty hassle free as the check-in staff and supervisors seem well trained. The only surprise was a €22 admin' fee payable at TAP customer services at Lisbon Airport on the return leg. You pay extra for gun cases AND checked-in hold baggage on EasyJet, so the price soon racks up and the flag carrier often works out cheaper.

Also, when flying out of the UK with any carrier, ammunition has always had to be in a separate locked box - not in your hold baggage or in your locked rifle case. Ammunition is not generally considered as part of your checked in baggage allowance as long as it weighs below 5kg, so don't get conned into paying extra. These are BAA rules rather than individual carrier rules I believe.

Lastly, don't forget that due to recent law changes in Portugal, rifles and shotguns in transit by air or by road when in country MUST be fitted with a trigger lock. Moderators are highly illegal. All ammunition must be head-stamped for the calibre of rifle you are importing. Hunting insurance in excess of €200,00 and valid in Portugal is mandatory by law.

Have a great trip - it's a fabulous country to hunt in, plus the food is epic.

Adam.

Adam,

Thanks, TAP seem to be a lot more flexible, a lot more flight time options too, and competitive, if you don't have to pay extra for taking rifles, but I'll wait and see what the organizers of the trip want to do regards airlines.

I will speak with graham regarding flights when he gets back but one thing is for certain we will fly with which ever company works out cheapest and less hassle . we forgot to mention about trigger locks in our original post but I guess everyone will use there flight cases to transport there guns whilst hunting so they shouldn't need trigger locks I will speak with our contact in Portugal later tonight to confirm . As with most things with easy jet nothing is easy or cheap but we will iron out all the details within the next week or soand let everyone know what exactly is required looking forward to meeting everyone who I don't know already

cheers Brian

I have just had an email reply from Easyjet, who have confirmed that you "CAN" have two rifles in one gun case, which they regard as "one sporting" goods, but you can't exceed a total of 32kg for both luggage, and sporting goods, split how you want.

Result !

trip is now full, thanks to all those who showed an interest and looking forward to meeting the new guns.
thanks

Flight booked with TAP from Heathrow.

After a text from Graham, discovered you have to book the firearms by phone, so did that last night, as they're open until 10pm. Quick, easy, no fuss.

Now looking forward to meeting you guys in Lisbon.
