brian is correct, last time we went easyjet were not sure about the ammo so suggested we paid extra (they would wouldn't they), when we went to check in ,it was chaos, no one knew or cared about the ammo, so we all paid extra for nothing. For this trip I have got all the relevent info and it states that "ammo can be stored in the rifle case in a secure box"
Yes you can share a rifle case to half the cost, but be warned do not let albert near it, as I found out to my cost

Firearms and explosives
such as handguns, automatic weapons, munitions, ammunitions including blank cartridges, pistol caps, fireworks, flares, smoke canisters and crackers. Exception: Firearms and ammunition for hunting and sporting purposes may be accepted as Checked Baggage. Weapons such as antique firearms, swords, knives and similar items may be accepted as Checked Baggage. A maximum of 5kgs of ammunition (UN0012 or UN0014) may be carried in Checked Baggage with appropriate paperwork, subject to available space, if declared at check-in and must be unloaded with the safety catch on and securely boxed or packaged. Only one gun per piece of Checked Baggage will be accepted for carriage (i.e. multiple guns must be packed separately). Please note ammunition must be packed as part of the Passenger’s Checked Baggage and may be packed with firearms, providing it is securely boxed. Passengers travelling with firearms must go to the Bag Drop Desk at least 90 minutes prior to the scheduled time of departure. The carriage of firearms is strictly limited. Passengers must produce valid documentation showing proof of ownership and legal authority for the possession of the firearm(s). Without such documentation, firearms WILL NOT be carried.
Also,
Do not confuse Checked Baggage with item of luggage.
At Luton two years ago they told us to put our ammo "cashboxes" into our suitcase.
Returning from Lisbon they wanted it separate. Boghossian will tell you what happens if you just ignore that

Hmm, it sounds like it may be worth taking a printed screen shot of their T's & C's, so the staff can see what has been requested.
Also, will they accept the listing of a firearm, and serial number on both an FAC, & the firearms passport, as proof of ownership, because strictly speaking, it isn't !
