Mounting IR on barrel

I am looking at mounting IR on my rifle and find it sits very top heavy with IR on top of the scope. I have seen IR units mounted underneath the barrel. I thought this sort of thing would adversely affect the shot placement/consistency?

The trouble is you would have to Zero and take all shots with the IR in place day and night or its definitely going to move point of impact when its fitted. Never mind the fact its probably likely to mess up barrel harmonics as well.

Some rifle stocks have Picatinny rails attached under neath, so this would work, but not on the barrel.

It’s a light one, just high up and it makes it a tad unwieldy! Not that bad but would be better if I could under mount it.View attachment 177943

Wow, 'light' seems to be subjective, I'm reckoning that lot is over a kilo, no? You're not kidding about the height of the setup either, I can see what you mean, mount on mount, the scope eyepiece must be near 3" above the bore, never mind the comb, I assume you must be happy with performance, though.

There are de/focusable VCSEL IR lights available now that are possibly half the weight and bulk of the Nightmaster too, just saying.

It’s very capable and the change I made to the comb helped. Just find the standard IR off the wraith lacks punch to be clear enough at 200, where we’ve seen a fair few foxes recently. I have hesitated as I need to see the background clearly. I may get a mount that goes on the sling swivel and try that.
