Hello,

I'm curious about where in Southern England Muntjac are most densely populated. I know they seem to be prolific in the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge area. Are they as densely
populated in the west of the country? Oxfordshire/Wiltshire/ Gloucestershire etc?

Best,
Tom

This from 2016, with further expansion in 2019:

I would say plenty of muntjac in Berkshire, Oxfordshire and North Wiltshire, though perhaps not to the same overall density as Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire.

Don’t forget Bedfordshire, introduction” Ground zero”

North Wessex Downs to Marlborough ,full up.
None in my valley in Hants until l escaped Westward.
Two years later they chewed my dad's runner bean stems off up to about 18" high.
Buggers didn't dare when l lived there.
But then we did not see many Fallow either.
They were in the Harewood Forest or up further at Dunley,Highclere et al.

I would say they are a bit like an iceberg, what you see is nothing like what you don't.
3 on a trail cam 2 different bucks and a doe all late in the night from yesterday. Second unit a doe and follower 5.45am
So 5 you can't shoot good chance both does will be carrying.
The does will keep feeding hard then find a quiet spot..and so it goes on...

More Munt than rabbits round here, large herd in the centre of Norwich now. If you think about it Munt have discovered the perfect environment, suburbia & city centres, no one to cull them, safe from predators, loads of gardens roundabouts & scraps. World domination is easily achievable for the mighty Munt.

Been in Warwickshire, Coventry and NEC area since 1937. First one shot M6 junction near Coleshill at that time on a Keeper's fox drive.

I only scrolled down as far as the photo of the buck........then spent too long assessing its head :)

Plenty of foxes in and around Norwich, and they love Muntjac fawns.... just saying...

I hear this about them all the time yet on one piece of land I shoot which would seem like perfect habitat of dense woodland (80+ acres) bordering arable field all with thick hedgerows and spinneys there are none. This was after I saw three, a large doe, a small doe and a small buck nearly 4 years ago. I've had trail cams out, been out shooting and just looking for sign of them (occasionally using the Buttolo too) and nothing at all. I'm the only person allowed to shoot there and I've definitely not shot any more.

According to everyone who regularly shoots Muntjac the place should be crawling with them🤷🏻‍♂️
