Muntjac Southwest England

To throw in my tuppence worth; I've spent the last two years talking with a lot of woodland owners in a lot of Devon woodlands who have reported munties, but it wasn't until I was walking around a new permission a few weeks ago that I saw the strongest evidence of them on the ground that I've seen here. I'm off for a full assessment of the woods in question this weekend. I'll be taking my rifle and hoping to irrefutably dispel the myth that there are no muntjac in Devon!

Good man Leo,good luck with your quest!!:thumb:

Hi Dave, where in west Somerset did you see them, Curious as haven't seen any also from west Somerset.

Very late reply to this thread, sorry.... We are between the Quantock's and Exmoor.. closer to the Quantock's. Have not seen any more for over 6 months now, maybe "Orion" shot them all.:-D

shoot compton martin, chew valley, blagdon area ,have not seen one ,not to say they are not there though.

slots of roe or muntjac.webpslots of roe or muntjac 2.webp

I found these slots near Newquay

Inconclusive - but heart shaped and about 2cm in length

(They look bigger because of the soft substrate which always makes a track look as if it has been made by a larger creature)

I have heard one in one of my woodlands on the north of the estate I work on :100% it was a muntjac but still haven’t seen it !
several of my guys also stalking have heard it but no sightings as. Yet

Apparently they have been seen twice on my permission just outside Yeovil. However I am so clumsy and noisy I will be very lucky to ever see one. It's a miracle that I ever see any roe. Thank goodness for traffic noise from the A303!

My Aunt who lives in Hope cove for 8 months of the year , has said she has seen"them dog size brown ones with fangs" lol lol " the ones that you've shot Kev ( she's seen pics and carcass and has eaten them lol)

Hope cove is in the South hams in devon, near kings bridge,

She was adamant that they weren't Roe??????

Never seen them on my visits down there though??

Kjf

seen the odd one around northern Mendips/Chew valley, I am sure there will be more on the way though!
I live in the Chew Valley and have shot them in the garden. More obvious towards Bath and Frome and I have seen them in Wells. Very illusive. I watch people shoot them on you tube where they are out in the open casually mooching about. here they are mostly in cover and always moving in and out, very difficult.
