My Kit For Woodland Stalking

Binos, rifle, ammo, knife.bog roll and most importantly mo my lab the one thing i really don't like stalking without.

All that stuff in a bum bag? You must have an arse the size of a house!
My (smaller) bum bag carries;
1:25000 scale map of my shoot,
2x knives,
Collapsible cleaning rod for if I manage to stick my muzzle in mud or snow,
Butt Out,
BDS dissease recognition cards,
Fire steel,
Silva compass,
Ammo wallet,
Insect repellent (depending on time of year),
Some "S" hooks,

Then in two separate pouches on the bum bag's belt I have a small digital camera and a Garmin GPS.

I used to lug a fair old pile of kit around with me in various bags and pouches, but most of the time now - particularly when I'm less than a mile or so from the vehicle - I carry the bare minimum, stashed in my pockets:

10 rounds on stock sleeve
Latex gloves
Couple of lens wipes (for binos and specs)
Chalk puffer for checking wind direction
Buttolo call if after Roe or Muntjac / jaw hook and drag strap if after bigger quarry
Big knife and small knife on belt
LED torch on belt
Phone if there's any chance of a signal, which rules out most of Scotland it appears

After that, it's rifle on shoulder, binos around my neck and boots on my feet. My jacket has a distress whistle on one inside tag and a little button compass on another. Mind you, as I mostly stalk with Gadget, I could blow the whistle for a week and he'd still ignore it if he had a chance of a deer first!

I should also say that in general, while we like to stalk light, G and I are away from home a lot so we have enough cunningly stowed kit stashed back in the Disco' to open a reasonably well appointed shooting emporium, deer larder, gunsmith and human / canine field hospital (not to mention a pretty good greasy spoon cafe) at a moments notice. Morena was amazed when we produced the kit to create a 12 pint venison and vegetable stew in the middle of a Scottish forest after we turned up our noses at his Supernoodles...

Hi Sam,
Thats a very comprehensive list. I think everybody goes through evolutions of kit lists, i certainly did. My questions were:

1. Essentials. What you use all the time (every stalk) excluding emergency kit ( requirred for FC leases. (FAK, Stobe, Whistle, Foil blanket)) & Comms.
2. Usefull. Use quite a lot but not essential
3. Nice to have. neither 1 or 2
4. Great Idea. never used.

You have a lot of kit in a "response pack" but you dont mention a sack for extraction (roe sack etc) im curious what you use the lighter for? Aso The compass only makes sense if yuo have a map and you dont mention spare batteries, Surefire are hardly effecient, i have to carry plenty of spares.

Two general obsevations:
1. most people carrry way too many rounds...how many deer do you actually shoot before going back to the truck?
2. boresnake, totally pointless to carry as it wont clear an obstruction, better is a curtain cord!

Personally i only carry option 1, im only inyterested in shooting deer and if it doesnt put more deer in my larder i dont waste my time.

Right -

Sariel, I do stalk without anything but the real basics, what I take depends on where I'm stalking, often its not all of those things. If you read my above posts you will fathom that often I stalk all day. If I want a brew at lunchtime something to light a fire with helps. I dont use a roe sack because I dont like them. Because Im on my feet most of the day I dont want to lug a roe round on my back. Once I have gralloched the beast I "hock" it by its hind legs and cut a stivk from green wood. I then hang it in a tree until I come back to collect it. This gives me the option of shooting multiple deer in one day. To answer your other question the most deer I have shot was 6 in one day. I allow 3 bullets for each deer. One to miss, One to wound, One to finish (I've never had to do that, its a precaution). I carry 18 Bullets, they arent that heavy, and dont take up much room. 18 means three in the clip, five in the Cheek bag, and ten in the pouch. Its also worth noting that the cheek bag setup is on my .243, which is also a foxing rifle, hence the calls.

Harry, It is actually quite compact. Its many little things, packed well ;)

Hope this helps

Sam

Sam,
it wasnt a critique of your system just some questions; great answers.......

Its fine. People questioning what I use really helps me cut the unnecisary out - and add in bits that I need.

I'm an all day stalker wherever possible too. Sometimes it turns into a long walk with a rifle, others it's an all day stalk.

My kit comprises - Rifle, bullets, knife, binoculars, mars bar, rope, plus very occasionally I take a camera.

The only time I've wanted anyhing else was in the highlands where it was blowing a gale and the rain came upwards, sideways, and down.... Another mars bar would've been nice.

This thread just shows that its very much an 'each to their own' world out there.

There have been occasions where I have been astounded at the amount of pointless odds and ends blokes will burden themselves with when going stalking. You often find them shouldering whopping great cannons as well with big bull barrels glued into tactical fibre glass stocks and big scopes complete with matching sunshades.:p

For me its rifle. ammo. bino's, roe sack or rope, sticks, dog, ceral bar, small juice bottle, jungle formula other wise I get eaten alive by the little sh*ts.

And when you have shot a deer you gralloch it with your razor sharp finger nails or just gnaw it open with your teeth? :)

Ah but its not all pointless. In my book anything that can acount for a deer is worth taking (within reason) ;)

As you grow older the reasons for reducing the amount of incidental kit you have burden yourself with, in the hope or belief that it will get that extra deer, become more numerous. :old:

Harris,

I would love to know what you see as "incidental" on the list, bar the stuff in red. I said before that the stuff is not always used. For instance I only take calls in the rut, Hat and gloves in winter, Folding saw when in high seats.
