Well a long drive today but picked up.my new BMH pup. He has some big feet to fill from his predecessor Todd who I lost some 3 years back.
Been a while to find the right pup with a good pedigree but he is a little bundle of fun.
Meet Toby. The new addition to the UK Outfitters team.

Picking up mine the weekend malc same litter
Hello Rick,
Long time no see. How's things in deepest Dorset these days mate? Hope you are well.

Yes they are a great litter of pups Chris has got. Good bloodline and been well cared for too. Just got up to feed our bundle of trouble. This one certainly has got some get up and go and has a boldness about him, much the same as Todd my old dog had.

Looks like he’ll make short work of the basket, toys... and those lovely skirting boards! Just got to hope he doesn’t graduate to the radiator. Keep us updated with progress please, these are special dogs by all accounts and something that is very unfamiliar to us down here.

Oh he wont get the chance, hence the toys to keep him occupied. I have had two BMH dogs prior to the new one so am aware of how destructive they can be. They are not big dogs, but their grip and bite is something I would not want hanging on my legs. But their tracking abilities are second to none, and they are very loyal dogs.
Bitches are very different to the dogs in my opinion, in many ways!!

The photos of adult dogs my wife and I are looking at now are suggestive of a strong bodied medium bull breed - the stamina & strength variety, not the crazy OTT ones - but with the head, ears and nose of a proper scent hound. All in all a very interesting breed, something to read up on.

Get the wee bundle of joy into the kennel ASAP and before he gets too fond of such comforts and goes ‘soft’.

I acknowledge doing this when it’s -4 outside is probably a little harsh!

Not a chance of that happening K. My other half would crucify me!!
I have to rebuild the kennel roof anyway, so it not going to get done for a few weeks yet. He is put in the large cage at night and I have also cable tied the edges as I know how strong these dogs are. He is doing well and just like my previous BMH dogs I have spent a great deal of time on them whilst a pup. Good bonding at an early age is vital I think in a tracking dog.

That mate is the only way... a bond that will not be broken.

Oh funny, me and the wife are having a giggle now as we recall the various cable tie moments over the years with strong puppies that were too strong (and smart) for their own bloody good. We have the foldable wire crate type cages here and have gone to some lengths to make sure that the inhabitant remains inhabited... I once pretended to leave the room, and stalked around full circle to film the pup through the window, whilst he demonstrated to himself just how strong his nose was as he attempted to lift the front gate. Pop... FREEDOM! I had to take the mole grips to the latch to squeeze it tight enough so he couldn’t open it... I could barely get it closed!

I figured that!

Been toying with the idea of an Irish Water Spaniel for many years but with 2 women to sneak open the back door after lights out I can see the expense of a fully appointed kennel being a wasted exercise.
