My On The Bench Today Thread

Here is one on the go just now that I think nicely fits in with the What is a Custom Knife thread too...

... both on the bench and very much custom?

At this stage, for me anyway, the blank (size/shape/profile) is not hard and fast, I fully expect a tweak here and there, both the client and I will be watching it develop and any modifications it might need, it will get.

This will be arriving with its owner today, and it is truly worthy of its own thread IMHO, I will ask...

Over the last couple of days, I have been working on a design for a customer, very much based on a classic drop point hunter design, 3" blade...

This is the first attempt, P90 for scale.

Looking at that, I realised that it had serious echoes of the old Pat Mitchell 572 model.

So I dug out the old 572 pattern, here laid over my paper drawing, having been cut out.

The differences were subtle, but they were there, and they were improvements, I thought, it wasn't quite there though so I tweaked my drawing further and cut some steel. Here, the old 572 pattern below and the new blank above, the 572/25..?

The day before I had been working on a similar thing for another client, longer though, having a 4" blade.

The 572/25 got me looking at that, and I realised that 4" needed to go on a diet, 'day before' version below, slimmed down above.

Slimmed down, laid atop the 'day before' version, again the difference is subtle, a couple of mm, it makes such a difference though.

Here the two final blanks, that 4" got me looking through my old pattern box again.

One of these days (if I remember, which I won’t), I’m going to weigh a batch of blades pre and post the grinding process.

Assorted blades from kitchen to filleting and gralloching, various thicknesses of 2, 3 and 4mm stock, all bevels ground and some tangs.

I do wonder how much steel has actually been ground away.

Absolutely stunning, what an interesting topic, it’s been a fascinating read. Stuart, I seem to remember some time ago you selling some steak knives, they were beautiful. Do you still make them ? My best friend turned 50 this year and loves a steak, I’d love to get him a knife to celebrate even though I haven’t seen him since January. A single knife, not a set. Is that something we could discuss or has that boat sailed? Many thanks
