Nanuk Cases/Custom Foam Inserts

I am currently putting a 'package' together for a client, after chatting through their brief with them the project was screaming Mil-Spec protective case to me, I sent them a few photos of my proposal and we were away

It was between two for me, the obvious Peli but also this one, I went with the Nanuk as the size suited my needs a little better and it seemed to look a little more stylish.

I got my first look at the finished job over the weekend, WOW, I thought it was going to be good, it absolutely knocked my socks off though.

I went with The Foam Guys to supply, I tried a few suppliers (and there are loads at it) but TFG seemed on the ball, so they got the job and they delivered it well. I have no affiliation other than being a satisfied customer.

Was that just a single 'one off' insert or was it for a batch? If the former, and not wishing to be rude, what was the approximate cost?

Single one off mate, and not cheap...

All told, case, foam, CNC programming and CNC work of the foam, around £450.

All the suppliers I approached were similar pricewise.

I did find Shadowfoam, they are confident that it is very doable to do your own, which it is as I tried it, you are just going to get the crispness and perfection that I needed for this job.

When I came up with the idea I figured £300 would see it sorted, a mate of mine in the know of such things reckoned more like double that so I don't suppose it was bad?

Incidentally, Peli themselves were a load more, although I could have got a Peli from TFG for a little less then what I paid.

That looks like a nice case, a bit more "streamlined" than the Peli. I use a lot of Pelis and various forms of flight case, depending on the requirements. Have you any thoughts on how the Nanuk will stand up to being used? I've noticed that some of the recent cases seem to be more marketing than substance - A few years back I was sent two cases to try that had a big marketing spiel about having carbon fibre this and being used by Navy Seals and so on. First one that went out lasted 24 hours and we assumed it was faulty, the second one that went out was also destroyed in 24 hours I'm always keen to get the views of people using them.

When I say 'when I came up with the idea', I know there is nothing new or ground breaking here, it just isn't what my client initially wanted, I showed them the error of their ways though

Agreed, it does a little more streamlined, that was one of the reasons I went with it, that and size as mentioned earlier (it was actually a bit more expensive than the equivalent Peli if I recall correctly?).

I did a lot or reading up and asked around as much as I could too and the Nanuk get great reviews, time will tell I suppose.

I know when yeti test their coolers they send them to a bear sanctuary and fill them with food then let the bears attack them for an hour. If they stand up to that then they pass and are rated as such.
If you ever go into one of their stores and see what the bears have done to them then you would be thankful we don’t have bears over here

We were on the beach in St Ives last week and the lid to the beer cooler was stuck, I imagine it was a similar scene?!

The presentation knife has some engravings to the blade which i though it best were obscured.

Such a lovely way to present the knives Stu. Those Nanuk cases are really good quality and I've had one keeping a drone safe in the past.

I had to buy a few at once and couldn't quite justify a load of Nanuks so got B&W Outdoor cases which are also very good and at a relatively reasonable price. Worth looking at if you want to do a run of them in the future.

I do have a little project under way for that same client that calls for single knives/sheaths in similar cases, those B&W look perfect, and doable price wise too.

The Shadowfoam which I mentioned earlier, in fairness is very, very good, you can get a fairly decent fit and finish, if I were doing something for my own use that didn't need that air of professionalism, I'd be using that.
