Need a deer calibre

Thanks for all the infor, think I am either going to choose the 308 or the 270. I have never shot a 270, but have heard it is a bit of a mule with recoil? Im a big boy, 17 stone and 6 foot so that isnt a problem. Just wanted to know peoples opinions.

I think all this .270 recoil stuff is a load of b******s to be honest,I shoot an unmodded .270 using 150g pills and can't say I really notice the recoil, especially when stalking I still see the bullet strike and the deer drop through the scope.
Jase.

The first non-air rifle I ever fired was a .270 and I have used one reasonably regularly since then. The recoil thing is certainly overblown and nothing to worry about unless you have a particularly recoil sensitive condition. Even then I find the felt recoil between my boss's wood stocked .270 and my synthetic 6.5x55 to be almost identical.

 those stories are put about by total pansies who should be shooting pre charged air rifles to protect them for the dreaded "recoil" ;).

As said on here before I used an old BSA Majestic Featherweight deluxe in 270 Win. Myy last hunt with it I used the Federal Fusion 150 grain factory ammunition. The rifle without scope but with leather sling attached weighs 6lbs 6ozs. With scope and four rounds in the magazine it weighs 7lbs 12ozs ............................ not exactly a heavy rifle and recoil is fine thank you.

I suggest you speak to someone with a 270 rifle and shoot it if possible and find out for yourself.

Thanks guys. I have a closed ticket for another 2 years. Sounds stupid, but would land granted for 270 be cleared for 308? Or would land granted for 308 be cleared for 270? What im asking is out of the 2 rifles, is one bigger than the other, or more powerful in muzzle energy, I know the bullet size is different, but I spoke to my FEO and I have a piece of land that is cleared up to 270 calibre.

If you are dealing with the same FEO as me then I know he goes by calibre size rather than ballistics so land cleared for 270 isn't cleared for 308 but I'm sure he would reassess it if needed.

I take it you didn't want to try my 6.5x55, it wasn't anything sinister I just offered a chance as you are literally down the road :)

Recoil will vary from rifle to rifle to rifle. For example: I shoot a modded tikka hunter in 30-06 and the recoil is less than my remington 700 (SPS stainless) was modded in 308!
Similarly, I shot a tikka 270 in a synthetic and the recoil was less than the 308. If you can, try before you buy. But as long as you aren't looking at large magnums and such, recoil should be fine.

If you are dealing with Chris Allen then I know he goes by calibre size rather than ballistics so land cleared for 270 isn't cleared for 308 but I'm sure he would reassess it if needed.
