Chap on the range yesterday was using up some ammunition in a rifle that had belonged to his father. Loaded one round & the bolt would t close so he opened the bolt & this happened…

He hadn’t noticed when he loaded the round but it turned out the neck was split too. When he checked the rest of the box he found another with a big split. His father had written ā€œpractice onlyā€ on the box so clearly knew it wasn’t match grade ammo šŸ˜

Did it mean to use the ammo for practising, or he was practising making ammo?
Looks like the bullets too large a dia for the neck.
Ken.
Ps. I'd be very selective who's home loads I fired, especially my own. 🤫

It’s a 222Rem & neck would have been split before the bullet was loaded - split necks are common in this cartridge. Bullet is correct diameter. It was ammunition for practicing with as the old guy used to shoot a lot but like many of that generation used to hate throwing stuff away if he could still use it…

Really! I've been lucky these past 30years, my buddies too....
You’ve obviously not used as many as I have… used to reload 1500-1800 a year & most of the brass I was using had been destined for the scrap bin when I was given it & the necks got a bit thin so work hardened quickly. When I found a split neck the whole box (100) got annealed before the next reload.

I think you might be trying to make a point in the above but no, sorry, I can't see it šŸ‘

I was given some.308 reloaded ammunition from a friend who packed up stalking, all federal brass.
I decided not to shoot it so started pulling the bullets and on several of the cases the necks came off with the bullet.

Probably not but why would there be an accident ? rounds loaded as per my spec and used by me as well for years with no incident.

I have had it with Remington factory .308 and a couple of times on my 25-45.

I disposed of the rest of the .308 and the 25-45 I now ditch after their second firing as I load GGG brass that I don’t pay for.

Federal brass seems to have brittle necks, lots of splits in various calibres after a couple of reloads, don’t rate it at all.
