Hi, Looking for a new moderator for my 243 and just wondering if any of you guys got any experience of Hardy gen 4, Sonic 35 or 45.

Had a look today at both the Sonics today and they seemed well made but dont know of anyone who has one, I have had a T8 on my rifle for about 8 years now and its about shot out and fancied something different but still want the performance of the T8, any ideas guys?
 
i have a hardy gen 4 and like it but am going to go back to jet z compact next year i reckon the jet z is the benchmark for all moderators
 
Just picked up a AimZonic Plus cyclone mod from Alan Rhone, interested to see how it performs on my 6.5. I'm use to a jet Z so it's got a lot to live unto.
 
I'm sure it's all down to personal preference and what you'll use it for. Recently bought a Hardy Gen IV for stalking (so lot's of carrying and a few shots) and delighted with it. May well have a different view if I did much range shooting though
 
I've got an AimZonic Cyclone Plus on my Sako .270 and love it, only issue is after 10 shots you have to give it 10 mins to cool down.
 
Thanks to everyone who replied, still not sure, any more feedback would be great, I use the rifle for stalking mainly with some fox control.
I do have another T8 on my 7.08 the newer smaller type and to be honest its not going to last nowhere near has long as the other thats the reason Im looking elsewhere, performance is still good but not as well made as the old one.
I do like the look of the Sonic 35 as its smaller and lighter but, but does it work?
The Hardy gen 4 looks great and has had some good reviews,

I went from a T8 to a Hardy Gen IV because the latter gives a 55% weight reduction. Yes, it's not as quiet, but 1. I carry more than I shoot when stalking, and 2. The deer don't seem to worry as I've had more than one from the same position a couple of times now.

One the range I wear ear defenders, so the noise reduction still doesn't matter.

Yes there are probably "better" mods (stats TBC), but the Hardy does everything that I need, so won't be changing anytime soon.

Thank you for that, I do like the looks of the Hardy gen 4 and so do I like the look and size of the Sonic 35, and Im sure they work to some degree but its good to here from someone who has had first hand experience, I havnt seen the Hardy in the flesh but it looks well made.

Well, first time out and about with the AimZonic cyclone and I'm impressed, you hardly notice it's their. It does reduce recoil and it does quite the shot down a lot, what I did notice is that it produces a very flat tone more of a Phuppt ( to my Mk1 ear), I think the gas release valve built into the front of the mod lets gas our once it get to a certain pressure ( low pressure) so reduces the noise due to high velocity gas escapeing the mod. I don't think it's any quiter than the JetZ but it certainly lighter makes for a well balanced rifle on the shoulder and on sticks. The other thing is it has some sort of rubber coating on the mod which is useful just in case you catch the side of a metal high seat.

Cleaning wise the instructions say to drop it into a tub of paraffine one a year. The other thing is because it is modular you can swop the threads around and you can turn the Mod from an over barrel mod to a front mounted mod by removing the cyclone bit ( Back bit) all you need to do is to buy the appropriate adaptor or vice verse ( Over barrel can be converted to reflex) the key thing is because the rear cyclone bit isn't a item you need a slot for on your ticket you can buy the moderator on it's own then add to it at a latter date. The other part to it is if you wear it out you can send it back to the distrinbutors and they will replace the central baffles for you if it's within the 5 year warrentee period it's free if out side of the warantee period there is a small charge.

Basically It's a good piece of kit that does the job it's been designed to do very well.

There is a recent thread in this section where someone is having all sorts of trouble with the sonic mod, I was offered one very cheap when I bought my last rifle but opted for an sl5 as the build quality didn't seem all that good.
A shooting buddy bought the Hardy genIV at the same time, it's lovely and light and looks quality but its noisy compared to the sl5, especially when shooting alongside something solid ie. across a bonnet next to a windscreen. The fact it's made from aluminium worries me too, it will be interesting to see if they suffer with gas cutting.
I bought the sl5 for the build quality, it can't be stripped and the baffles won't cut so it will last forever. It can be used on semi automatic rifles without trouble and at 420g it's a fair bit lighter than T8's etc. and not too long.
