New scope

Looking for some advice, I have just treated myself to a new Sauer 202 takedown, the gun is in 30-06 do it all calibre and I am now just left to source s new scope. The two I am considering are Swarovski Z6i 2-18x50 or Z8 2-16x50?? I have spottted that uttings have £150 offf until Thursday so need to decide. Could someone tell me if there is any appreciable difference between these two in real hunting situations, also something I have never worked out on a Z6 with ballistic turrets if you can remove them and replace with normal adjustment caps, I'm not a lover of BT but can see that on a takedown if I purchase a 25-06 barrel it could be useful to setup the different zero points? I am leaning towards the Z6 as they are slightly cheaper but then again I could happily afford either?? I look forward to some advice, Tom

I've had a Z6i 3-18x50 with BT, it's an excellent scope, and very good VFM in my opinion. I swapped it for a Z8i 2.3-18x56, purely because I needed a railed scope, and couldn't get the Z6i at the time. This is also an excellent scope, but you need to remember the BT is an extra, not included in the Z8i price. You'll need to add circa £170.00. It's very easy to swap from cover, to BT.

I don't believe the BT Z6i is removable, I don't recall it coming with a separate cover.

The difference between 2.3, to 3, is negligible, so neither here, nor there.

If all options were available to me, I would pick the Z6i, and save the £300-400.00 +

What an unenviable position to be in...what a difficult choice to have to make! :)

Quality is going to be the same with either. Cachet of having the latest which will possibly command a higher resale value?

You numbers don't add up though. The 6x range of the Z6i should be 3-18, (or 2.5-15 or 2-12 I think). So the marginal choice between the Z6 and Z8 on magnification range is whether you envisage more long range shooting or short. Given that many people cope with fixed mag at 6x or 8x for general stalking ranges you are well covered for either.

If it helps...on my Z4i (3-12) I have it set to 7x-ish when stalking and wind it up to 12 for range paper punching...but I am only shooting paper at 100 yards. It has never been used lower than 6x, even when covering a close (<50metre) area from a high seat. The reticule is very fine which works for both the 12 times view of a target, and combined with the field of view at the lower magnification makes it easy enough to find an animal quickly.

Tom as you never want to shoot anything I'm surprised you need any more guns, have you got that double rifle sorted yet ?

Personally I seem to stay between 6 - 12 for everything.

Look forward to seeing you again soon

Hi Robin, No the double is still with the gunsmith, I think he wishes he had never seen it!! As for the scope I have just checked out Sportsman's ( Thanks Stubear ) and they are doing a great price for the Z6i 3-18x50 without the ballistic turrets, hopefully once ordered I can try it out on some of your fallow next year!!

Thanks Tom

I just got the Z6i 2-12x50, absolutely brilliant scope, have a look at Swillington Shooting Supplies, they are always competitive on price with good after-sales service if required.

I want to update my scope. I found device from ATN with great characteristics, it is ATN X-SIGHT II HD 3-14x day & night rifle scope(here is full review). I read some reviews and want to buy it. How do you think it is good variant? Have someone of you such scope?

Hi Mezeth, you might find you get more response if you start a new thread about the ATN scope. Do search for it on here as well, it has figured in some earlier threads. The Mk 1s suffered some software problems I recall.
