I'm planning on a trip to New Zealand in 2014. Having spent hours searching the Web there are some fantastic packages available at fantastic prices. Anyone been to, have any contacts in or can recommend a reasonably priced guide / operator in NZ?

For how long and where abouts are you going in New Zealand? What would you like to shoot? I spent a year out there hunting :)

If you want a UK based Outfitter I can give you a contact I used twice when I went out there.

Hi James,Thanks for your post. I don't know NZ at all and therefore don't realy have a preference as to which Island. I would imagine a couple of weeks but it all depends on price and availability. As to what would I like to shoot, I'm really not fussed, it depends on price. I don't think I could or would want to afford to shoot medal heads, rather shoot cull animals at a reasonable price.I'm planning on meeting my mate from Australia there so looking for a package for 2.Thanks

I used to shoot with Phil Wilson years ago when I was living in Christchurch (South Island) - http://www.nzhunt.co.nz/AboutUs.html - at the time he specialised in mountain hunting in the southern alps - Thar, Chamois etc, from the website it looks as if he is still going, highly experienced but not sure how his prices compare.

I have also heard good things about Nathan Foster http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Contact+Us.html

I would email a number of outfits and see what they come back with, there is a wide range of possibilities and getting a handle on relative costs can help shape your itinerary!

There are plenty of guides out there mate, just look on the net. All I did was email a couple people off the fishnhunt forum and got taken out for couple of crates of beer. Simples!!!
you could even put a post up on there saying woud anybody take me out hunting. Pretty sure you woud get a response as they are a friendly bunch.

If u go on the DOC website there is masses of info, i was out in nov for a wedding tried to do a bit of hunting but a bad time off year, got flown into a DOC hut by heli with some mates to do some whitebaiting/drinking and possibly hunting but the coastal bush was too thick plus been poisoned, althou still seen deer and sign off deer and pig. The crew that flew/jet boated in after has had a couple off pig dogs with them

If ur times limited u might be better off with a package/guide but over there really easy to hunt on DOC land for free and they also have some quite decent huts (some not so decent) or fly camp. I bought a book, forgot the bloody name now  Spot X Hunting i think, it basically lists something like 1000 'x' marks the spot type places vuagely where deer/game are or should be and gives a quick description of place and likely spots/times. Hopefully will try to get out in a couple off years time just after the rut/roar and do a bit of DOC hunting living out of a tent. Dunno if u can order it here but NZ hunting magazine was a really good read.

Hi Sauer,
What is it you are wanting to hunt in New Zealand? Are you after alpine animals (Tahr and Chamois?) Or deer? Or pigs?

The fish'n'hunt forum based in NZ is a fantastic place to get contacts ;)

Mate has just come back and had a great experience but would defo go with an outfitter on private land as the government land was being poisoned and what wasn't deer where few and far !

Norma, there are PLENTY of deer on public land. To hunt on your own on public land is something that you can do nowhere else with the freedom that there is in New Zealand. Deer, tahr, chamois, pigs, wallaby, game birds and small game are quite abundant if you do some research...and it is free to hunt them which makes the whole experience much more rewarding. Only a tiny proportion gets poisoned, and you can find out where they are or have done it on the Department of Conservation website: http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/threats-and-impacts/animal-pests/pesticide-summaries/

Roaringstag ,my mate got back on sat while I don't disagree with you I can only go on his not my own experiences which were him seeing considerably more deer on the private land due to the gov land in the area he was being poisoned ! He also said the locals idea of plenty of deer were "3" .he was there for nearly a month so did travel about a bit .
kind regards

I'm not trying to start a fight Norma, just pointing out that with a little research great results can be had.

Deer were introduced to NZ, along with the tahr and chamois and every other game animal we have. They are treated as a pest to New Zealands ecosystem, so they get a hard time. They are hunted from helicopters, poisoned and there is no restrictions to what, when or where you hunt generally. In saying that, there is 21,000,000 acres of public land to hunt in NZ and not more than a few hundred thousand people hunting it. There are places that get hunted all the time, and they are generally a hard place to find a deer...these are the places that the locals will send you. Do some reading as to where the heli's aren't allowed to hunt, where poison has not been laid etc etc and you will find plenty of deer. It is unusual to got for a 5 day hunt as I do in February (the end of our summer) and see less than 100 deer. My mate Russ and I counted 28 stags in one basin.

All my point is really saying is this: If you are going to make the effort to come to NZ and pay all that money, you might as well enjoy the challenge of a free (in everyway!) hunt in NZ. If you want to pay to shoot a cull stag, or pay a fortune for a "trophy" stag inside a managed game park (either behind wire or not) then I reckon you missed the point of hunting the mountains of NZ...and you might as well have paid to shoot one over there...it'd be a lot cheaper, quicker and easier!

Just my opinion, but hey-I live here and have built up a fair amount of knowledge of where to go....for someone who only has a month in NZ, I can understand why they would hunt private land if they were not doing so well...anyway, here is a bit of footage from two guys who came and hunted here. They did some homework first, and my god did they have a good trip! All on public land.

Roaring stag your mate Harry said you can shoot a bit and indeed have plenty of deer in your neck of the woods so I'll have to back down and make way to your greater knowledge of your country chap .only wish my good mate had come to your area instead .how did you find our roe when you visited our island .
kindest regards

G'day Norma,

I'm sorry if that came across cranky! I'm just amazed how many people come and hunt New Zealand...but pay a guide to do so! We are so lucky here in the way that we can just head for pretty much anywhere in the mountains without rules and take whatever we want...and the people who put a bit of effort into figuring the place out first tend to do alright.

Harry had a great trip-how do you know him? He murdered his fair share of animals in a short amount of time...over 30 in 6 weeks I think...and he had his mrs with him for half of it.

I loved England, and I loved the Roe. I have always wanted to hunt them. When I was young at school I read about them and always wondered about the wee deer that hid in hedges, and I was not disappointed when I got to hunt them! I took some great animals, and learnt a heap. I will be back next year as I have been given the opportunity to hunt a black class one buck in Germany, an opportunity that I could not miss! I will take the chance to hunt in the UK when I am back too, so I will be there for the rut again!

Anyways, here is two stags from this year-I posted them in my introduction thread, but I will elaborate this time.

This stag I took in the Rakaia river catchment in March. The Rakaia herd is quite famous for it's heads, it's genetics originate from Stokes Park. The Rakaia herd has been hammered in the past year by foot hunters, 1080 and the most devastating of all (because the huge country is so open)... Wild Animal Recovery Operators...helicopters. The animal numbers are down in this area, but they are still there. My mate and I watched 54 animals over the 4 days we were there although we put some miles under our boots to find them!

He is a bit narrow, and his Bey tines are fairly non existent...but, I am happy with my trophy, the first deer i have shot in the Rakaia catchment...after 4 years of hunting it hard.

And here is another stag. My friend Erin shot this one. He was on the back of some private property in North Canterbury, his genetics of no real significance. It was a great hunt. I was photographing a spiker and gave it a couple of roars to get his attention for the photo...and this fella rocked up ready for a rumble.

Erin shot it, but we lost it. The next day, with the help of her wire haired terrier she found it. This was her first bit of antler, and she is over the moon.

So don't get me wrong... I have nothing against hunting private land... but, I recommend giving the mountains of NZ a go if you are going to make the journey out here... they add a lot more to the hunt than just the antlers you take home. You can bet your bottom dollar that Erin will be charging around in the alps next year :)

If your mate is coming back... get my contact details and I will point him to some deer.

Cheers
