You say you have a pet gunsmith!
If you had told us that in post 1 i would have suggested getting his advice.

He doesn't **** around and would have just cut it off - billable time and at least a mod sale of it, whereas I at least wanted to try to save it

Yeh, 80+ posts and you end up doing exactly what you said he would have known to do from the get go!

Well you have to ask these things and few of the 80+ responses went anywhere close to answering the original question.

Understanding what was going on inside was half the battle.

The end of the barrel is going to need reducing and a re- thread at the least ! The moderator isn't going to fare any better either !
Why carry on with trying to get it off ? makes no sense to me at all to me . Cut the moderator with a hacksaw and through the barrel ( removing as little as you can ). Re-crown and thread is deffo required and there is likely a heck of a lot of pitting in the last few inches of the bore minimum. Shortening or a new barrel is the only two ways of fixing this thing for shooting . pitting at the barrel end is detrimental but a bad corroded crown and rusted thread will take accuracy to Hell in a hand cart . Your going to throw anything from £100 up for a re-thread and crown, up to £600 -£1000 for a new Barrel job depends how good / bad the rest of the bore it but that male thread on the end is gonna have to go anyhow!

I thought it was just being held on by crud after having unscrewed it, but I was only undoing an internal stainless spigot/thread adaptor so I ended up cutting it - see above.

The threads were fine, I just ran a tap over them to clean them up - it was a stainless spigot that unscrewed with relative ease once I could get at it

The end of the barrel isn't that bad either, but will get it re-crowned to be on the safe side.

The threads on the barrel , fine ? You ran a tap over them ? You mean a die then not a tap and if they needed that i would have cut the end off the barrel as i suggest , if you look down the last few inches with a bore scope unless it was left really well oiled the end of the rifle bore will be pitted and a really cant see the crowning at the end of the rifling being OK after such a situation personally . Go straight to crown and rethread if it doesn't shoot as good as hoped. Its a really inexpesive cure and something i would always carry out personally when we involve corrosion .

Sorry, yes a die. There wasn't any visible damage but used it to just clean the threads up.

The problem was that the stainless spigot in the mod was tighter on the barrel that it was in the mod.

We have carried out basic visual checks of the end of the barrel and it wasn't really pitted, but will re-crown just to be on the safe side and then the rest just needs a bloody good clean.

The barrel will be checked with a borescope when clean just to double check things.
