We can take two people every half an hour starting from 8.30 am you will have half an hour to try 12 bullets either 3x4 or 4x3 ( different bullet manufactures) to ascertain how they perform using your own rifle.

Please enter the time you wish to attend when booking the ticket and we will do our best to accommodate you on the day.

On the booking form please register the firearm calibre you will be using on the day, the time you wish to attend and which ammunition you wish to try. If you have the following main stream calibres 308, 243, 6.5.x55, 6.5 Creedmore, 270 and 30-06 we should be able to offer these in non-lead. If you shoot not one of the above calibre's please contact Alastair prior to booking and I will check to see if we can obtain the calibre.

• You must bring your firearm certificate with you, no certificate = no shooting.

• If you are shooting an obscure rifle calibre we may not be able to provide the ammunition. Please contact Alastair Boston beforehand to check.

• If you are using one of the more common calibres we hope to be able to offer you three or four different manufactures to try.

My feeling is that those who will go lead free have done, and those resistant to it will resist until the end. You just need to look at the lead free posts on here.

I like the idea, but I'm busy that day and have got lead free ammo sorted, thanks to Ed in Edinburgh.

What a great idea.

How come these events only ever hapoen in the North of England?
As @Buchan hinted we, the BDS NW Branch have had several 'Firearms Training' (Range) days where @Edinburgh Rifles have come along with a large selection of NL ammo for people to try. We will do the same at one of our days this year.
Dates are:
Sunday 21st May 2023
Range Day – Venue Withets J35 off M6 start 9.30am – please email northwestengland@bds.org.uk to book - quoting May Range Day in the title.
Coaching/Practice for DSC1 available if requested when booking

Sunday 9th July 2023
Range Day – Venue Grayrigg start 9.30am – to book please email northwestengland@bds.org.uk quoting July Range Day in the title

Saturday 14th October 2023
Guests of Eskdalemuir Range – to book please email northwestendland@bds.org.uk quoting Eskdalemuir in the title

You don't need to be BDS, can be BASC (due to NRA rules stipulation)

There is a good deal of reticence to change or even try non lead

In part due to early on, bullets not offering the same terminal performance - in some instances down to design, in others due to lack of knowledge of the non lead alternatives and comparing like for like weight class which simply does not work with solids

There are other factors too- shot placement being one of the most significant

It’s certainly worth attending events such as these to at least see first hand and try ammunition in your own rifle

Some rofles simply do not shoot copper well be that down to chamber /( throat length ) and twist rate of barrel

Try it for yourselves

I think it’s a really good idea, and if one is held in the south of England, I’ll definitely go. I’ve so far tried three different makes of copper factory ammo for my Rem 700 .243, and the best group I’ve got so far is 2”, much worse than I was getting with good old Geco 105 grain. At around £50 a box, it’s getting bl**dy expensive.

No, purely because of distance. I would do one up north (actual up north!) or Borders. One of the main reasons I haven’t changed to non-lead is the initial cost of finding rounds that work for my rifle. I’m pretty new, but started on lead so that’s that. The ongoing cost vs lead is also a tough one to swallow….

Although I spend an unorthodox amount of time on here currently, due to a leg injury I may add, I have missed this.

I will be trying to arrange a lift over. I might even have to book two slots as I’ve a couple of rifles I would like to try.

I've found the peregrine bullets easy to reload, I threw some together and got decent accuracy. Sub inch off a car bonnet, that'll do. Have a chat to Ed, he'll help you out.

If we can make this event work,we may hold some more in other parts of England. This for me is a taster to see if there is enough interest from the deer stalking community , at the moment and being honest, its not looking favourable for any future events ! As current bookings are slow.
