Not Looking Like 21 For Big Unlock

I'm not "anti-vax", its just inappropriate for me to use up valuable resources that would be better targeted elsewhere. Not least at the fearful and gullible!
We don’t have a shortage of vaccine, back to my original point, the unlock is based on the millions of people who came forward to be vaccinated, your contribution to that effort was zero

I disagree, I think you may be have over done the gullible pills!
Ahh, well. Since you live on the Isle of Wight (nice place, and, dare I say it, very white), you might still be living in the 1950s. Spent many happy evenings moored up in Newtown Creek, and partying at the Royal Yacht Squadron. Meanwhile the World has moved on. For better, or worse.

Do the ferries now require at least a lateral flow test before embarkation ? If not why not ?

This is incorrect or out of date. As of 3rd June, the lowest uptake among over 40s is in six London boroughs - the lowest being 65%. Apart from them, everywhere has over 80% uptake.

What is more worrying is the reported and anecdotal high levels of vaccine avoidance among NHS staff - especially in London. This is worrying not only because of COVID risks, but because it indicates worrying levels of anti-scientific, conspiracist, idiocy among a group which is supposed to be more scientific and medically educated than the man in the street.
These were the figures published in the MK Gazette for various areas of the town. If the missus hadn't thrown the paper out I would have taken a photo of the article to show to the disbelieving.

Not sure on the testing, a close relative had to produce one to get the hovercraft from Southsea, but it is important that us islanders test before traveling to the mainland so that we don't spread COVID to there. As for the vehicle ferries they are a complete joke anyway, the island was effectively cut off this morning with Wightlink's newest flagship breaking down due to failed engines, Red Funnel banned from Cowes Harbour during fog following last year's crashes with yachts and the Lymington route being run down by Wightlink anyway. As for the 1950s experience many of us older natives are doing our very best to combat this notion, mainly for the benefit of the younger generation who are struggling so badly in our famed low wage economy that many cannot afford to rent housing let alone buy. Unfortunately we have a complete dickhead for an MP who is non-native and is only an occasional visitor who somehow appears to believe that there is some merit in the current situation and opposes anything that might raise living standards here to something comparable with mainland levels.

When I was working in Portsmouth, in aerospace, many of the co-workers were from the IOW and commuted daily, which they felt was worth the effort, for their lifestyle. Which, having been their guest a few times, I saw their point. And enjoyed my yachty jaunts there, in other people's boats.

Not so much the hovercraft, which seemed to me rather flippy. Sadly I was correct about that.

However, that couple, with whom I still keep in touch, left. Finally. In the 2000s. No future there for them, or their children. Sadly it is the drip drip drip of the cleverest people realising that their talents may be better pursued and rewarded elsewhere that steadily drains away the brightest and best. From Scotland, and Ireland, and on a micro-scale, Wight land. Leaving behind a gene pool diminished in the wrong direction. So sad,

The glory days of e.g. Saunders Roe employment, even working on Black Night and Black Arrow, are long gone.

Sad to hear about your disinterested, mostly absent MP. But the IOW must surely be one of the safest seats anywhere, so a shoe-in for Robert William Henry Seely MBE (AKA Bob Seely). You can get to turf him out at the next election, as if that's ever going to happen.

Besides he seems to be a jolly nice man, looking at his twittering, what's not to like ? twitter.com/IoWBobSeely

Since it has piqued my interest again, I did find this official economic analysis interesting. And saddening.

I was down in Portsmouth regularly, for training.

I well remember seeing a "commuter" (in suit and tie), making his way to work from the IoW to the mainland.

He was on a Jet Ski.

Still makes me grin.

Thanks, unfortunately neither the 13.9% wage gap nor the 26.5% GVA gap have improved since then and once you take inner city Portsmouth & Southampton & Gosport out of consideration and compare the island with other similar semi-rural areas in the region such as Fareham Borough and the New Forest this prosperity gap widens even further. The misery for our under paid youngsters is compounded by our housing market being under pinned by better off retirees from the mainland moving here and second homers although at least the DFLs contribute substantially to the local economy.

Oh, DFLs, that's a new one to me. Pronounced "duffle" perhaps ?

Also a resident of an area of deprivation, stunningly beautiful, with few prospects for bright young people. Hopefully you don't have a County Lines problem. We do. As well as the FILTH (failed in London, try Hastings. Then fail again.), and our people smuggling lot, who have moved with the times, no longer just the amusing baccy and brandy on the move around here. It was rather exciting a few weeks ago when over a tonne of very high quality cocaine started washing up on the beaches, presumably somebody didn't tie the knots properly when leaving it on the seabed to be picked up later by an innocuous looking fishing boat, or recreational divers. I was even tempted to do a little beachcombing myself.

Maybe Priti Patel should move down here and fix things. Perhaps Amber Rudd (actually a very good constituency MP, as well as Home Secretary, much missed), could rent out her house to her.

Read all about it, all the news that's fit to print:

TBH, the IoW seems rather idyllic, from my perspective.

I quite liked Amber Rudd. Seemed the sort of girl who would have been good at lacrosse.

As do I. When in power she officially opened up an extension to our home office approved gun club, there is a plaque on the wall to prove it. I was there.

Her children are also well brought up, despite her being a single parent.

And, as a constituency MP, she was razor sharp, and fixed a few problems for my neighbours, always approachable at her regular surgery meetings. Sadly discarded by Theresa May. Enough said about her, or that effete Cameron person. TBH, BoJo could do worse than pick up the 'phone to her, for some friendly advice.

Unfortunately we have higher than average crime figures for drug offences and are now a paedophile hotspot, probably due to the fact that we have a sex offenders prison that releases straight into the local community on completion of sentences. What do you believe is "idyllic" about the island? Central government treats us like an inconvenient third world relic of the British Empire.

What’s the matter with some of you people?
if someone doesn’t want to let Boris the peroxide chimp pump some unknown **** into their body without their permission then let them be….
It is NOT fair to expect people to inject themselves with anything they are not 100% happy with.
if you’re an old codger that is worried about Covid, you need to stay away from people with a cough. Apart from that, crack on.
Dopey ****s

Nothing's wrong with them. Half the SD must be over 60. Half of them were calling the younger generation that have a high chance of survival selfish pricks for not wanting to be locked up indefinately. Now the same people need to look in the mirror and think are they the selfish ones that don't want to let the young ones live their lives.

Spoken to two individuals in the last two days, both had been given post-Covid vaccinations, which left them reeling for five and six weeks respectively; it seems their immune responses reacted rather strongly to the vaccine. I question the logic and wisdom of post infection ‘immunisation‘ or trying to out-immunise your own body’s defence system with a made up concoction.

As for masks:

I think a sample size of 2 from a population size of circa 68 million or 40+ million who have been vaccinated would be described as statistically insignificant. There are plenty of facts around that show that even if you have had the virus you should still be vaccinated

I agree completely about the sample size point you make. And yet, I‘m a bit perplexed as to why naturally made antibodies should somehow offer less protection than a man made alternative source; you cite facts - care to share them?

Government CDC web site Q and A answer to “ I have had CV19 and recovered should I still get vaccinated“

Yes, you should be vaccinated regardless of whether you already had COVID-19. That’s because experts do not yet know how long you are protected from getting sick again after recovering from COVID-19. Even if you have already recovered from COVID-19, it is possible—although rare—that you could be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 again. Studies have shown that vaccination provides a strong boost in protection in people who have recovered from COVID-19. Learn more about why getting vaccinated is a safer way to build protection than getting infected.

They do not know how long natural antibodies protect you but they expertly know how long their cooked up jab response does. Excellent almost as convincing as the quarter of people who died from the delta variant at one point having had already two jabs.

Total make it up as they go along shysters simultaneously lining the pockets of big pharma and themselves with all this consulting work they have racked up. Heaven forbid they say nah it’s over lads let’s all get back to normal and you can stop paying me….
