NV dilemma

Traditionally, Vortex scopes have not worked well with NV add-ons
From the reports of others, it appears that it is virtually impossible to get both the reticle and the image in focus at the same time.
It may be that the current Vortex Viper no longer suffers from this problem.

Thanks for the response. Will try it out if I ever need add on NV.

As Bruce says the Pard is exceptional with an IR or laser Illuminator, I use the SRX & its crystal clear to 200m. Personally I found the picture using just the in built IR to be poor. It’s a neat, simple & effective NV & it’s possible to set your scope up to compromise for the extra length without too much of an issue.

Some of the extras like WiFi & recording are a bit clumsy to use & I gave up as too much faff for me.

Have also used the nite site which a decent unit but much more cumbersome & I felt the compromise for using the screen was greater than the Pard.

Your scopes aren’t ideal for either unit, both of which need parallax adjustment to focus & work best with larger objective lenses. Got a cheap Hawke on my air rifle, a Hawke Sidewinder on my hmr & delta on the centre fire they all work well & with a bayonet fitting on all scopes it’s quick to swap the Pard around.

Hope this helps.

Hi bruce
The group is on facebook and is called n8vision there are videos on there with them changing the lenses to 12mm and one or two of one member who seems to be one of the main members talking about changing the camera and several videos of the pard being stripped down , in fact he may have one or two on you tube
I to am a member on the NV forum and dont know alot about the technical side just bits and pieces and am not diputing anything you have said in your post , i am just commenting on my findings between the two units i have
Cheers

I had a look at the strip down video on YouTube
I had to laugh when he said that changing the lens from a 16mm to 12mm won't invalidate the warranty.
All of the PARDs sold have a 16mm lens apart from a very small number which had 25mm lenses.
To change the lens, the whole unit has to be stripped down and if you have a problem with it afterwards, then the seller is going to know you took it to bits because the lens will be marked 12mm and not 16mm
As for changing the camera - no chance

Would the Pard work with a 8x56 Swarovski?

Not very well
Like all digital rear add-ons, some sort of focus control on the riflescope is needed - either adjustable objective or side parallax. And to get a sharp picture at relatively short ranges (50 yards and less), the focus adjustment needs to go down to 10 yards or less.
This is because Infra red light focusses differently from visible light when it passes through the scope, so unless the scope has some sort of focus control it will not be possible to get both the reticle and the image in focus at the same time

I've had a few open debates with this guy

First time he tried telling me that the pixel size and resolution of the sensor doesn't affect night time performance and light gathering.

Then that 12mm lenses are better all round and gather more light..

When in affect its the opposite a 16mm on say 6x optical scope mag is the equivalent of around 9x when viewing a target, to get the same size target image using a 12mm your going to need to increase magnification upto 8x reducing the amount of IR passed through the scope and making it perform worse at range..

Had a few discussions, then I was removed from the group..

If anyone swaps these lenses anyway, because people will jump in there warranty will be invalidated, so its there own daft fault..

Anyone wanting these units you can use the code SD-MEMBER for 10% off..
Night Vision NV007

Combine with a Solaris SRX and a scope along the lines of a Hawke Airmax, Sidewinder, Frontier, Sightron, etc and you're laughing.

morning and a happy new year

from what i can gather the fella thats changing the lenses to 12mm is a rat shooter and that seems to be his main interest so wont be bothered about distance shooting , the 12mm lens must i summise be better for close up work , as you have said once you start changing things and mucking about the warranty goes out of the window , but the same thing happened when the photon was first introduced , no sooner had it come out and there were doublers added then lenses taken out and replaced with camera lenses , you pays your money and takes your chance

Is it really worth dismembering your unit for, and losing warranty its going to be worse for rimfire/centre fire shooting ranges as more mag will need to be used, reducing IR throughput as mentioned through the optics.

People mucked about with the Photon ,but its the same you start opening things up your warranty is gone..Pulsar discontinued the 1.7x lenses, as they didn't even want them screwing to the front adding extra weight on the front assembly, so they fitted a lock ring to prevent it, which some removed.. It did improve the image considerably at range on the Photon, but the downside due to its design the field of view was massively affected as a result..The push on versions are rubbish as you still have potential flex or misalignment that can affect POI.

Some report the Vortex as good with night vision, the ones I've tested have been poor..

Already a big thank you to everyone and best wishes for 2019 !!!

I managed to get my hands on a pard 007 for a good price ( or better said, my Son got me one ) and will let you know how I get along with it

Greetings,

David

I am seriously contemplating getting one of these and would be very interested to know where you got it from and how much you (or your son) paid please as I do like a bargain!
