Evening all,

I'm looking at getting a front end add on night vision device. To be used on an air rifle and a .22, what would be best? Any pros/cons to a rear end/ocular add on. Which make and model would you go for and why? Which IR torch is best suited for it? Can I use a night vision add/clip on with an illuminated rectical? Roughly what distance will it work out to? Would thermal be better?

Reason am looking to get is for rats/rabbits/pigeons. Air rifle around houses and .22 out in the fields/woods.

Thank you all in advance!

Compared to a rear add-on, the only advantage of a front add-on is that it will work with virtually any scope with a low base magnification x4 or less)
The usual issues with rear add-ons like lens coatings, and side focus are not relevant to front add-on
However, front add-ons are more expensive than rear add-ons, often have issues with holding zero and scope magnification will be limited because the image will become more pixellated as the scope magnification is increased (typically x8 max)
If it's going on an air rifle/rimfire for rats/rabbits/pigeons why not just get a decent day/night scope like the Arken Zulus ZHD520R (x5-20) or the upcoming ZHD312R (x3-12) and use that for everything
The daylight image is more than good enough for air rifle and rimfire ranges and it has an onboard laser rangefinder and ballistic calculator which, when set up correctly will give you an accurate aiming point and let you accurately hit targets that would otherwise be out of range. It also has an onboard IR illuminator for NV work
Finally - they cost less than £600 - half the price of the Pulsar NV front add-on

Cheers

Hi Callum, Fellow Aberdonian here, I have a Couple of Pard pieces one fixed scope on my .22 and I have the rear clip on on my .17hmr I personally prefer the rear clip on. without an IR torch you can see up to 100m on a good night. I use a Wulf tri colour torch for more range and allows for more magnification. If you have any other questions just give me a shout. 👍
