Off road tyres for Hilux

Mud terrains are best for anything offroad, the only reason not to fit them is noise and extra fuel use.

And their handling in wet / cold / snow on road 😜

The big tread blocks with no sipes don’t clear water well or provide much grip on icy / packed snow.

My nitto's are quiet, handle brilliant in wet, snow and cold conditions. Similar to the stt, a round mud tyre. Pick your application, then pick your tyre. I needed tyres for thick heavy mud every other day or so, that would work in the wet and cold. A soft compound mud tyre with decent longevity?! Deep sipes in it too 😁 il try and get a picture up

There are no sipes there.

The sipes are the separations in each tread block, allowing the individual tread block to move as partially separate. Have a look at a true Winter tyre to see sipes.
What that tyre has is large tread blocks.

One of the main things regarding AT and MT tyres to also look at are the amount of Ply’s the tyre has. This also helps in making them more resistant to punctures from sharp edged stones or pieces of wood.
Try picking up a tyre with 3 ply’s and a tyre with 5 ply’s and you will feel the weight differance.

All AT and MT tyres are rubbish in road use, wet or dry for grip compared to a normal tyre, as they have less rubber contact patch. They are also poor when it comes to braking, again less rubber contact patch. But you have to drive appropriately.

But you have to chose the spec of AT tyre (30/70 or 50/50 or 80/20%) offroad/road use.
Plenty video’s online with even a AWD car on normal road tyres v’s a FWD car on Winter Grips trying to trying to go up a snowy slope. The FWD wins with correct tyres on everytime against the AWD.

I currently use Maxxis MT764.. they're noisy but they work well and unlike the khumo I had before they seem to grip just as well in the wet on tarmac!

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link him but check out LR90GMC on ebay... Charles will sort you a great deal!

BF Goodrich all terrains all day long! currently run them on both a Mk7 and Mk8 hilux and had them on many vehicles previously.

Just picked the Mk7 up from its MOT which it sailed through again and the AT's have done 34,635 miles... still loads of wear left admittedly there going hard and starting to craze but they are fantastic tyres..

I’ve got grabber X3’s on my Dmax, mud terrain tyres but handle very well in all road conditions, they are also quiet.

The sipes are in the centre of the tread blocks...

A single sipe and massive tread blocks. Not a good combo for good road manners in the wet. Everything is a compromise but don’t kid yourselves they’re as good as a road tyre on the road (in the same way as a road tyre isn’t as good in mud). Horses for courses...

I am a kumho fan had 6 maybe 7 sets in a row. And both of my utes wear the K`s
The ones fitted on the left ( MtKL71) kick the arse of the ones on the right (MT51) in the mud n schitt....believe me!

That's the point I'm getting at, everything is a compromise. The compromise for these are a soft compound, allowing extra grip in cold conditions. They aren't a road tyre but they handle extremely well on the road
