Old Eley Subs (Green Box) vs New Eley Subs (Cream Box)

andyk I had an Eley squib once about 18 months ago. The bullet went 4-6 inches into the barrel and the case actually popped out of the action when I opened the bolt due to gas pressure. There was a lump of congealed powder stuck to the base of the bullet when I drifted it out. Only ever the one but I’m glad I didn’t put it down to a miss and go for a quick reload.

I would say that is a major reason.

However the increased vertical spread I saw is not just due to shaving some lead ... The uniformity of the round is less than the older one.

Quality control went out the window
We sent back a batch of 5000 a few years back
When tested and pulled powder and bullet weights were significantly different.
Some rounds were close to squib and hitting ground in front of 50m target
Struggle to convince myself they are worth trying out again after that.

RWS and Norma (basically the same) are fantastic in most rifles we have tested.
Are cheaper and don’t smell of urine when fired...

Do either the RWS or Norma cycle ok in a standard Ruger 10/22? As Ruag website say the RWS is not suitable for selfloaders.

My observations over the last 2 months (Mar to June buggered by Covid-19) using the new Eley Team rounds (ran out of Ely Edge and it's no longer produced) is there are a significant number of failure to fires, that would indicate a lack of consistency with the primer application. Rifle is a Anschutz 1417 and each round shows a crisp clear strike. So far only gone though 3 boxes, the other 7 may be abandoned in the cabinet as I'm going to move to RWS match, similar price point.

Several other shooters at our club experiencing the same issues with Team and Eley Action.

For my semi-autos I've moved over to CCI AR tactical, so far can't fault them.

Reason being I'd awful problem with accuracy when I used a snake only realizing that this was the problem after months of head scratching, threw the dam thing away and no problem since. It did exactly what yours is doing would be
clean?
a .22?:coat::coat:

how strange...
He did mention cleaning on the initial post. I've had accuracy problem after using the snake myself ;)

I was firing 10 old, 10 new repeatedly ... So cleaning issue is not relevant as the old grouped well. Not a boresnake. I was oiling the stocking, adjusting trigger and cleaning Forstner bolt so thought sod it run a Jag through a couple of times.

Looks like Norma and RWS to try next time go to RFD.

Shame Eley has made such a mess of it, would have preferred to stick to them

I got a batch of Eley subs recently after the wins I normally use opened up to unacceptable group sizes.
They grouped well for 50% then walked 20 % and miss fired the rest, load of wink.
Bought some CCi Subs and bingo, bang on the button. Never rated cci for years but they are miles better than E feely shite.
My club members say Efeely match stuff is wink and prone to more misfires than a shuttleworth snap

Old Eley Subsonic Extra Plus were great, IMHO from then on there has been a decline, regarding both the green and now white box stuff. RWS I would always have 4 through the same hole then one an inch off at 50yds which put me off. SK Stanadrd is fantastic but they don't do an HP. A solid still sorts out bunnies but you have to be extra vigilant with respect to increased ricochet potential.

The older eley subs definitely shot better out of my cz455. The newer ones are still good, especially after upgrading my hammer spring, but the casting doesn't seem as precise. I have noticed a couple out of every hundred have a louder report but I'm trying to ignore it.
RWS gummed my boltface after a couple of mags,
Lapua didn't group for me,
Winchester 42's grouped exceptionally but had about one in five going transonic and flying out of group and CCI subs had about one in ten doing the same.
Seems I'm stuck with eley for now, I just wish they'd dig out the old bullet dies and bin the new ones
