That's .50 Cal. Browning (aka .50 BMG).

Still modern, and now a rifle cartridge for husky & manly types.

ok thank you. do you know what i would have been used in / for. other than a 50 cal browning.

husky manly types . im glad i went from 243 to 308 but im prepared to whimp out on using this one

Not used in a 50 cal Browning as the cartridge has a belt, would not be very useful for the links in a machine gun do a search on the 50bmg and you will see for yourself.

think it may be a 13.9mm , made by royal ordinance /radway green in 1942 for the .55" Boys anti-tank rifle cartridge a 13.9x99 (B) belted based on the 50 cal but a belt added as this is a magnum case

Dad trained on the Boyes Anti Tank rifle and the 17 pndr.

One smart arse tried shooting the Boyes from the hip supporting the butt on his hip and yep it broke his hip. Another tried digging his toes into the ground and the recoil broke one of his ankles. Not a "nice" rifle to shoot by all accounts. BTW he was on 25 pndrs but they had to train on the others as well. Not sure if they had a Bren carrier or not.
