Opinel knife

Am I correct in saying I could carry an Opinel No.6 as a pocket knife. (3" Blade)

When opening a standard lock knife it locks automatically.

On opening an opinel it is not locked until you twist the lock manually.

Therefore is it a lock knife or not, how do you think I stand regards the UK Law. ?

My assumption would be that you couldn't (carry it without reasonable excuse, or whatever it says) because you can (lock it).

Note'd DALUA, But might it not be the case until you bring the locking ring into play, it would just be classed as a pocket knife.

Take the lock ring Off,and legal carry as not a locker :)

Bernie

I thought of that too BERNIE. I know the smaller ones don't lock, but are a bit to small.

PS. One other factor I did think on was safety to one's self, would be in turning the lock

so the blade would not shut on you fingers. As it has no spring.

Perhaps s reasonable excuse!!!!

...but don't forget to carry some Elastoplast as well!

Although I have a few Knives, I have messed about with Opinel handles they are very easy to shape.

I have played that dance a few years back, now i dress 10cm off the back of the blade (save the FINGERS)

NOT ON THIS ONE YET!!!

One would need some case-law, I guess. But on the whole, if you have a good reason to use a knife for some lawful purpose then presuambly you have a good reason to use a knife which reduces your chance of cutting yourself.

An interesting thought!

Billy you can carry a knife in Scotland if you have cause to do so IE, stalking fishing etc, I wrote to the Scottish knife consortium at the time of the consultation for the current knife bill, they wrote back confirming the above .

I posted this up on passion for stalking as Roger had asked the question the answers were concise and to the point ,that you can carry a knife if you have due cause and purpose the have a knife in your possession stalking matches the bill .

Jesus. Do you mean to say that the length of a folding knife blade is regulated, too?? How do you folks stand it?? :banghead:~Muir

MUIR, This is the UK. :british: Where sadly they REGULATE almost everything, think I'll pack up and come over to YOUR'S. :D

Lots of frequently asked knife questions here: (including the Opinel question!)

Well MS. After reading that me think's me's SNOOKER'D.

So it's back to the STOCKMAN!!

THANKS FOR INPUT LADS.

Opinels are brilliant, I always remove the handle and use it for kindling, nice and dry, the blades are less dangerous with the handles removed (you could say I dont like Opinels!)

Well not really.

What's regulated is the length and type that may be carried in a public place (without reasonable excuse, the onus of proof of which falls to the carrier)

Basically if it's pointed, bladed and "the blade thereof" is more than 3 inches in length (if it's a folder) or has a lockable or fixed blade of any length... you run the risk of getting into a spot of bother carrying it in a public place... even if you have reasonable excuse... and very serious bother if you have no adequate excuse, as you will probably be prosecuted, if caught. At least, that's what I believe the roolz indicate.

What's stupid and I mean..... stupid is that even in your car if you leave your knife or spare as we do after shooting in the glove box you're stuffed. If you got pulled and searched on the way to the supermarket in your pickup, how many have a backup blade or knife somewhere in the vehicle you use for work or hunting?

Muir you're right it is crazy. I detest knives that don't lock after having a knife fold up on me resulting in 6 stitches in my thumb.
I have had need of a knife all my working life and live in fear of being accused of carrying an offensive weapon. To me a knife is a tool and I would never ever think of using a knife for any reason other than lawful purposes. Once again unreasonable and unneccessary legislation.

...which came about largely in response to reports such as this - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/14000-knife-victims-a-year-860857.html

Iwrch, I wasn't passing any comment on the reasons for, or fitness of, the law. It's a sad set of stats that led to this law in the first place and I fully understand and tend to support the reasoning. Sadly, as ever, criminals don't obey laws and decent people usually try to.

However, I was trying to explain to Muir just what the law indicates in this instance and it doesn't actually limit blade length, per se.

And I will try to avoid calling you Percy in future, I'm sorry.:-D

Has any of you actually read the link monkey put up or just seen the NOs part of the answers .

No one has said you cannot carry a knife, they have said you require due cause and good reason,to do so ,which stalking, shooting, gardening and a host of other things are good reason .

Umm.... WS... did you actually read what I posted?

I said it much more consisely than a rambling set of Q and A's. BTW... Unless you are actually stalking in a public place... I think you'll struggle to find good reason for having your gralloch blade on you when you're going round Tesco's. Unless it's a Sgian Dubh, of course.
