Options apart from 17 hmr

I amt thinking of getting rid of my 17 hmr to get a smaller calibre ie 22 wmr. And also thinking of swapping my 22-250 for a 204 or get rid of it completely.
What are people thoughts on other options apart from a 17 hmr I do not reload at the moment

What makes you think a 22WMR is "smaller" than a 17HMR? I tested the two side by side, extensively. With regard to energy, the 22WMR won every time.

Federal 30 grain a 2340 fps was north of 350 ft/lbs ME
Any (CCI, Federal) 40 grain at 1950 fps was around 340 ft/lbs ME
The 50 grain at 1800 fps gives 350 ft/lbs ME.

The 17 grain HMR at 2550 fps delivers 270 ft/lbs.

The HMR shoots flatter to 200 but arrives short on energy. The 40 grain 22WMR beats it.

Before you buy a WMR though, Make sure there are a number of varieties of ammo available to you. You will need to find what your gun likes. I just tested Fiocchi 40 grain. Shot great in a couple of mine.

As for CF. I would get 223. Common and plentiful. ~Muir

Roughly how many rounds do you shoot when you go out with the HMR? What are you primarily shooting, rabbits?

The logical replacement is one of the Hornets but that means reloading. If you don't reload, it's hard to beat the HMR on rabbits as a throwaway cartridge for shooting large numbers. However, I'd be interested in the WMR in 40 grn given @Muir 's figures, if it achieves the same accuracy as the HMR and if I could get the ammo locally.

Before you change anything I suggest you talk to your local RFDs to discuss ammo availability, especially as you don't load your own.

Problem with the 22wmr is getting the ammo for them. Most shops only stock either 22lr or 17hmr and even that's getting thin on the ground with supply issues.

I have spoken to my local gunshop and they said if I give them notice they can order it in for me.
It will be mainly for vermin the reason I am wanting rid is I’m sick of all the split cases and I’m just waiting for something to happen 😂😂.

They may order it, but will it arrive? There are huge supply issues at the mo, stuff just isn't arriving from abroad.

Get a 22lr and for cf a 223 then you can pick up ammo anywhere

Can also use the 223 for vermin, it's good for fox aswell long range crows and rabbits ect

First of all give your head a shake "get rid of your 22/250"! WHAT!!!
Get a reloading set up and reload from 40g through to 55g for that then, get a 22 Hornet load 40g BTs under Lil'gun and have a happy life..
You'll gain nowt going from a 22/250 to a 204, I have both but if i could only have one, I know which it'd be.

Can you keep it fed ???

No good whatever your choice if you struggle get the ammunition. These days you need to check availability of components/ammunition.

😂😂😂 I have dabbled in reloading in the past and I did enjoy it but I did it with a friend and I have moved away since then. My 22-250 is a sako 85 it likes 55 grain wieght using the Winchester ammo.

I really enjoy reloading but not doing anywhere near the amount I used to due to avaliablity of components. Atleast with the common calibers I have I can pick up ammo In shops. I'm really scratching around for powder and primers at the moment.

22lr, 223, 243 and 308 can be picked up in every gun shop in my area. Have to shop shop around for 22 250, 6.5x55 and other calibers.

17hmr is a struggle at the moment and the quality of ammo is shockingly bad!

I would suggest considering the .22 WSM if there was any prospect of getting ammunition for it. I'm tending towards Muir's line of thinking .22wmr as I seem to be able to feed it

BEcause the 22WMR is an older cartridge (1959) and are made by manyh differed companies all, perhaps, with differnet specs, it is important to try every brand of ammo you can and shoot a full box of it before you judge. Do NOT clean it after firing. Just shoot it. (Don't get silly and decide to remove the copper fouling.) If you try 50 and it doesn't work, move on.
Unlike HMR which is made at one plant and branded differently for each seller, the 22WMR is made at many plants world wide. Be patient. ~Muir

17 Fireball! 20gr VMax for rabbits @4100f/s and 25gr VMax or Bergerac for fox at 3800.
Great calibre, no noisier than an HMR, very accurate, cheap and easy to reload. The fireball has double the range of an HMR, 300 - 400 on rabbits and easy 250 on foxes - what’s not to like😁

Just bought a 22wmr. Am using Remington 33gr ballistic tipped and it’s a little firecracker.

I use Ed at Edinburgh rifles and he stocks loads of the stuff

But there aren’t, no one is importing ammunition so once current stocks are gone you have an ugly club.

Wmr s a cracking little round, hornet is superior in every way but you need to reload or have deep pockets.

I sold my .22 rf and got a wmr with thinking when they ban lead hopefully the wmr will have a better alternative?? I use Hornady 30grn vmax and it’s ok out to 130 yards like. I wouldn’t get rid of the .22.250 though it’s definitely worth keeping!!
