Otter spread

Saw a pair last Saturday while walking the dogs in Irvine , there has also been a few traffic collisions in the Ayrshire area with otter fatalities, so they are on the spread, it’s surprising how big they are.

People need rember it's a ruddy great big stoat , that killed many a hunt terrier hence the Border Terrier ( a terrier with the intelligence to ballance aggression with common sence underground ) a good coat and a love of water
Anyone who has had tge pleasure of a stoat caught by its tail only in a fen will get just how much fight the Musalid brings with it !

Saw fresh padding today on the river. A big dog by the size of prints, my little mate is always interested in them, even diving in river to look for them. She's also decided to act as an anchor on deer carcasses and won't let go of them, screaming blue murder when taken off them. Has to get fuss from the Mrs now.to placate her.

Otters might be lovely, but they are a bloody nightmare for anyone with fish!!
My friend had a lake with over 50 large carp/goldfish some up to 15lbs. One bloody otter had the lot!
But what a wasteful creature! it would just eat a chunk out behind the gills and leave the rest to go and kill more!!
I'm not surprised they were wiped out. The only good they do is to eat invasive signal crayfish. Other than that, they are a destructive pest.

They're harmless, beautiful creatures really. I love spotting them if I'm lucky enough to while out fishing. I often saw them put on a display in a pool and have caught trout from a pool while they were swimming in it.

Fully protected here in Ireland since 1990, it's a sign that the water quality is very good if an otter lives in it.

Tell that to the 100 ducks I released 🤣

We used to release a good number on my syndicate but have given up, once they arrive it’s game over. Several local shoots are the same, and wild mallard numbers have plummeted.

A beautiful creature for sure, but a ruthless killer, as are all mustelids.

Yesterday morning I saw one dead on the road to Wark just outside Cornhill on Tweed. The road is adjacent to the Tweed.

D

This adversion to Carp came up before on #130-136 on the Koi massacre.
Carp are inedible to otters (and humans too), so mustelids just eat the tasty bits of the fish like brain tissue, liver, and the roe.
They kill them all to get a decent feed - quite adaptive and intelligent behaviour.
Not popular with the carp-fishers at all. This chap got more than he bargained for recently.
Good thing too.:)

The recent release was the European otter which is slightly larger than our native sub species I’m told 👍🏻
Apparently they have different behaviour too, travelling in family groups rather than singly. Makes them even more voracious!
Did someone post on here or did I already know, but it was actually the otter hunters who recognised the decline in otters and decided to stop hunting before the ban? That would be typical.
As regards salmon and sea trout, I think you'll find that seals get first dibs. Probably the grey seals doing the most damage rather than the smaller common seal.

Awaiting corrections!

A quick look on line doesn't show any otters from abroad being released. Has the term "Eurasian Otter" caused some confusion ?
As above, awaiting corrections.

That's interesting, makes you wonder why the Monks and all the Abbey's had carp ponds, and preferred them to salmon. Our Eastern European friends eat a lot too.

Ha ha, not inedible perhaps - just tasteless. Otters have read that this fish has been vilified in the United States as not being very good to eat.
Some anglers jest that the best way to eat carp is to nail it to a wooden board, season it with salt and pepper, let the carp dry in the sun for a week, remove the carp and eat the board.

normally people that cant cook, or are too lazy to cook or their mate told them. but never actually tried

The Polish have Carp for Christmas dinner so I'm told. They more or less cleaned out The Lough in Cork anyway when they discovered it was full of them.

I know some Polish folk over here. They think our carp taste very muddy and prefer fish from Eastern Europe for Xmas.
