They don't seem that fussy in Norfolk, they are as bad as the otters for killing fish, they love to BBQ them as they catch them, reminds me of Gollom in Lord of the Rings for their love of fresh slimy fish!

Hugh Fearney Whitingstall or similar did a programme on the carp, and shot some fan tails doves as well if I remember right, the fish had to be put in a barrel with fresh clean water running through it for a day or two before it was fit to eat , had to rinse the muddy flavour out of it first. Think the ,ones did the same when the6 kept them in their pond.

I think both terms apply to same animal sir .The European subspecies being slightly larger apparently according to my source ,an animal keeper at Longleat .

Yes I remember the programme where he shot the doves off the coach house/garage roof with an old B.S.A. 12/15 .22lr rifle.
Strange that I don't recall an outcry at that time about how unsafe it was but I can remember the great HooHaa on this site when someone did exactly the same on the shooting show.

Its the same problem repeating over and over again, some creature, ( insert your personal favourite ) is identified as being in trouble, endangered or whatever and given complete protection, theres no end date or review of the population status so when/if the population bounces back and begins to cause damage there’s no possibility of addressing the issue.
Here NPWS are belatedly waking up to the fact that both curlew and hen harrier are being predated out of existence, we will soon have “ Curlew champions” striding the land, building fences around nests and teaching farmers how to deal with a horde of general predators, every single one of which except for fox and mink are protected.
With 80% nesting loses last year, those champions need to get a wriggle on.

We have a small stream running through the town I live in and yesterday I noticed an artificial holt suddenly appear .The stream has been almost devoid of fish for years bar minnows and bullheads since the trout release upstream was stopped few years back .I’ll get a pic next time I’m passing .Will spice up dog walks though that’s for sure

You can’t really complain if someone catches a few fish to eat now and again.
On another level entirely were the 2 East European gentlemen that grabbed and barbecue’d a swan a couple of years ago, they said it tasted a bit like eagle..

Around the Peterborough area a few years ago the Eastern Europeans rounded up a shed load of swans and breasted out the lot, leaving the carcasses for the council to clear up... The Queen was furious apparently, couldn't believe the cheek of it all!

I sat and watched an Otter fishing fir crayfish on the Water of Leith by the Stockbridge Colonies in Edinburgh at 1 pm about four weeks ago. It wasn’t bothered by people walking past. It was just diving down amd coming up and then munching them before diving down for another. It was fabulous.
We certainly have more otters than mink around us, see them regular on the duck ponds
Rubbish.Just like a badger they will kill /eat anything they come across which is small/ weak enough to overpower.

Well why wouldn't they? They are not so numerous they threaten our livelihood - as I said, we can live with them.
BTW, keep your rubbish to yourself!

There were 4 in the River Don the other day when I walked the dog. Less than 10 yards away feeding in a fast stream. Not remotely bothered by people watching them. Used to be a Kingfisher followed them presumably for scraps, but I suspect the Sparrowhawk has had 'im. Not bad for the centre of Aberdeen

Just back in from walking the dogs and the young un has rolled in what appeared to be otter crap .
