Out last night.

#69 tonight in the rain checked over the shoot before tomorrow. Then got some fresh rabbit bait for pipe before heading to another farm. Played vixen on heat for ten minutes with no response. Then hand called with immediate effect. fox came screaming in from far field. Stopped it at 140 yards for simple chest shot20251031_205652.webp
Good month but going to have to go some to get to 100

My target was 100 but dont think I have enough time to reach it. Will be happy to hit 80

#48 Gotcha..
Beating today with the dog, but needed a bit of solitude & darkness to finish off the day.
Had a look at the far end of the shoot and spotted Jack $hite...
Kept looking as I weaved down the lanes on the way home and spotted this fella moving along the end of a wood, caught up with a few minutes later as it came through the hedge and onto a field stuffed full of hares.... a little call with the mouse squeaker, and he copped a 60grain Vmax at 173yards, he sat looking towards me..

I have been out twice before yesterday, each time managing to get a bit closer to the herd of fallow running around my field, but not in a position to take a shot before Im spotted and they bugger off, out of my comfortable shooting range.

Our field juts out into my perm and depending on which way the wind blows depends on where the fallow are usually at. As i set out yesterday morning, i was confident they would be to the n/east, having gone over a new stile I built Saturday to improve my access and chances. I slowly made my way close to the hedge. Heard a lot of rustling as they were laying up in the hedge line, made off at great speed out of range, again!!!

Undeterred i made my way back across my field to see if i could find them on the other side, but this time as I approached the gap in my hedge i got on all fours, and sure enough found a heard of about 30. Not in a position to shoot as they were against a hedge bordering a local byway, but as they slowly moved up the field, i was hopefully they would move into a position where for a safe shot.

Crawling around 150m I could see them in the field through the hedge, waiting for them to move, and then suddenly they spooked and run off, ending up back where I and they had started.

As I walked back down my field I could see them through the hedge, and they could see (or hear me the wind was at my back)) despite my best efforts. But i again got down on all fours and after what seemed an age, I got within about 90m of them, then crawling into the hedge, managed to get into a position behind a largish tree, to stand get my sticks up take aim and take a young buck at a range of 80m.

Two things I took away from yesterday, is that i can get close enough to get a shot if i am patient and get low as i can. I had begun to doubt that given recent outings.

The second is to take more time selecting the animal to cull. Having been out a couple of times and not really managed to get close, I took the 1st animal that presented which was a very young buck. On reflection form my spot behind the tree, i suspect had i stayed quite and careful its possible that the herd would have spread out a bit and older, more mature deer would have presented.

On the positive side, the deer moved about 2m then collapsed and died where it fell, and i got a chance to use my @Stuart Mitchell blade for the first time.

Up at 4.30 Sat morning and out after Fallow does (had 2 so a good start).
Sat evening ..early night..of course not...off for a "quick" look at home. Up to the top of the lane and onto our neighbours fr a bit...nowt about. Heading back towards out house and theres a fox in the bottom field...a quick dash to get a sensible shot and its gone. Waited 10 mins and another appeared and headed up towards our lane but met its end about 120 yards away to a 120 Grain Sako Blade from the Creed. Saw another up above the house but no sensible shot...then heard one calling the bottom of another neighbours field...10 mins of trying to get a shot at it in cover and off it went...looked back to where I shot the fox and theres another...300 yard dash and shot it 2 feet from the first from the same spot I was in to take the 1st.

Same again with another fox ...went looking along the bottom of the next wood to ours...no shot then headed back home and shot a 3rd 20 feet from the other 2. Rain stopped plat at 12.00 so a long old day but a great result

Sunday - sorted plumbing issues (in the house) then swapped scopes about (Alpex onto .243 and Z6I onto the creed). Decided about 18.30 to have a quick look and see if there were any foxes about by the house so set the caller up for 10 mins...no luck. Heading back to the house I picked up a heat signature in the bracken. Got set up in the front of the barn and when the fox cleared cover at 100 yards..game over and back in the house before 19.00
