Out last night.

#69

Out last night on a farm I've only been on once so not too sure of my bearings. Anyway set off from farm and all I kept seeing was roe and hares . I stopped to watch 4 roe in a field and noticed a fox heading my way in the next field. As it got to the hedge it did a right turn and headed away from me appearing at the top of the field I was in 229 yds away. I gave it a hand squeak and it screamed in to 37 yds , nice mature dog fox.

Whet the heck is that on your lovely stock?

Got busted last night, spotted a fox and headed in his direction. He went along a track and through a gap in a hedge. I followed up. Did he go left or right. Damn and blast he went right and clocked me by the lights of a distant industrial estate. Off he went.
So I made a plan, 6 pm I pulled up facing the field I spotted him in last night, roughly half an hour early. I was duly informed that the chicken would be on the table at 8, don’t be late !
630 and the fox came trotting along the far side of the field with an 8 foot wall as a backstop. A short whistle and he stopped. Game over and home well in time for a drink before dinner.

Had to stop using mine, that bright blue water pipe you can't see sometimes isn't a good back stop....pshhhhhhhh, drip drip pshhhhhh.....
I put a rimfire bullet through a plastic water trough recently, felt really shameful telling farmer next day and offered to pop over and mend it. He had already put a nut and bolt through the hole. First damage I have caused in many years of pest control. Can be super tricky round the yards and calf pens. Dont fancy doing the phonecall of shame again that's for sure!

Must be common practice, I was shooting rabbits one night with my .22lr and on entering the farmyard noticed a few rats so started knocking a few over until I hit the unseen blue water pipe.

The shameful knock on the door ensued but luckily farmer not bothered , laughed it off and fixed it straight away ...PHEW

Out last night with the HMR on crop protection.
Fields were saturated after all last weeks snow had melted. Squelched about and managed a few.

November 23 and hedgehogs still not hibernating even though just had minus temperatures and snow for 3 days.

Two vixens tonight, dark belly on the second one. They were both hanging about together. Really thought it might be a paired up dog and vixen but no. Didn't feel that cold but the gritter lorries were flying about on my way home. Forecast doesn't indicate a freeze, wonder if they have got it wrong?

Well done.
Yes, councils often get it wrong, especially Labour councils.

When a buddy worked for council it was volunteers on gritter waggon at night.
It was a sought after shift and often driving round with no grit in the waggon, with double bubble and a day off in lieu.
KB.
Ps. A nice “Cross my palm” could be had from places (Especially pubs) with large car parks.

Out last night for a couple of hours, just did the three fields behind the farm. Usually productive but no sign which is a good thing, I think. Did see a handful of rabbits. 5 woodcock and 22 hares!
