Out last night.

On the feed rounds today, Charlie sat watching me behind a fallen log, bang on midday.
223 in Gator so last mistake. Dog fox, presumably going home after a busy night chasing the ladies. We're shooting tomorrow so just glad he didn't come out through the guns.
So did you get him?

So did you get him?
Oh yes, just under the chin, could only see his head. Normally wouldn't have the 223 this time of year but I've had some magpies move in from the sheep walks next door. Hence the 223, I can reach out to them at ranges that they think they're safe.
Just goes to show, you never know when Charlie will turn up, the amount of night time look arounds that you never see one and then bang on midday one's watching you.

Hmm been there and got the badge. I bet you could never of hit that strand of wire with 50 shots. Debatable if you could ever see it at night.

I was using a pulsar Krypton on a Duralyt on 3xmag, I could see there was a fence but what are the odds of connecting with 1-8th of an inch of wire at that distance, I know it’s a Blaser .222 but not even the mighty crudmoor is that accurate.

Out tonight - shot this Vixen at 80 meters - knocked it flat

Shot another fox at 45 meters, solid chest hit but the bugger disappeared into undergrowth - wouldn't have gone far but amazing how they run after being hit with 62gr bullet

Crikey - all that needed Smelly, as it ran away was the Benny Hill music it ran so fast…..
I have previous with fences cleverly shooting across a lane in broad daylight at a sitter carefully avoiding the strands both sides, err, except the very old rusted one a foot from the muzzle which of course is visible as a wobbling blur.
Silly FB - again….

Well after what seemed a lifetime of wind and rain got a break last night Frost and light winds so not one to look a gift horse in the mouth got the batteries charged and kit ready only for the grandson (spotter and Sherpa) say he was going to his girl friends for the night so solo mission. Arrived at perm got over gate rifle on back caller in bag round neck and seat in hand and started squelching my way to the stand , hardly got half way and I could hear a vixen calling and sounded pretty close , so took a deep breath and said to myself dont panic just get things organised lol so seat steadied, caller out , thermal round neck , rifle out IR mounted, mag loaded , and bolt put in , and all this time I could hear the calling getting louder and closer lol, got sticks up rifle on and sat down checked IR still in field of view of the Drone x10 all good switched on the caller remote , then the thermal and had a scan and holly crap there was a fox moving from left to right heading away about 130 yds in front of me, trying to keep calm IR on and eventually find it sitting looking right at me , safety of and squeezed the trigger to the point of no return sending the 55gn BK sleeping pill on its way to hear the resounding thud and down she went , I say she as I could see and hear her calling just before the shot. Result only there 15mins and one down, next I here another fox calling so thinking it might be Mr Fox I play the vixen calling back and sure enough here he comes working his way through the gorse, he gets to a small open bit about 120 yds away but as soon as I put my IR on he looks at me then starts making his exit slowly I give my loud cough ( sheep cough but dont shout Oye) he stops but then starts again just as I released the round resulting in him going down but needing a quick follow up shot ( I hate seeing these vids with foxes writhing in agony till they expire they deserve the dignity of a follow up shot) number two down , now I can settle and have a call then I see a larger heat source deep in the gorse have .a look and its my old friend the ewe from last time curled up asleep , moon got too bright and had a good night to txt the farmer and told him where she was , dog and vixen for the night gid stuffView attachment 376197 20231229_203224.webp

Well how far was that fox? Your dot is huge hardly assists accurate shooting. I think you missed high and left you should have waited for a broadside shot.
Such is life.

Horses for courses I think, what you or I see through the looking glass may not represent the actual in a post, I am surprised that a thread I started Nov 3 2012 has taken off in such a fashion, just shows how many of us are “Out in the night”.🦊

Yes, the dot is fine until it gets the base mag of the Pard sp01 treatment.
I need to focus the IR for more light. It maybe I'm struggling to see clearly so am trying to look around that huge dot!
On play back I was aiming high and totally unnecessary. I sometimes think I'm still using the rimfires I've made do with for years.

He is still about. I will call in and see him the next time I am in Devon. He has a man cave you could die for. Its a old church hall size!
