Out last night.

Talking of birds of prey I'd like to give a big thanks to Mrs Gos Hawk this morning!

I went to see if I could see any fallow this morning in the dark. Naturally I ask if a visit was ok and was told of course and can I sort a fox out that is stinking the place out around the farm house!
Well when I got there and out of the yard and into the field a fox trots away. It's still dark and I'm out with an open sighted rifle.
Not to worry, just stalk the place I said to myself.
I crested a brow and looked across a valley to see at around 700yards a fallow doe in the thermal. I see others also but that doe I've seen a couple of times there....I wonder if she will be there tomorrow....
Anyway I look the other way into a wood about 200yds and see what was a large fallow making his way in for the day.
Still not light enough I pursue just incase etc etc. It didn't happen but whilst trying I could see a fox looking out on a bracken hill side.
This is just above the farm so I set course to stalk the hill side.
This is where Mrs Gos comes in.
By the time I've got on the hill side it's light enough to shoot so I put away the thermal and switched to binos.
I know the thermal works in the day but I just wanted to use glass for a change.
Opposite the hill side is the field I just walked up. It also is hilly and knobs and there is a large oak.
I noticed a bird of prey lift off a hill top and aloft in the oak, only 100yds away. At first I thought it's just a buzzard but then I noticed the long tail. I picks up the binos and sure enough it's Mrs Gos. Her and her fella have bred there for a few years now and chwis and his kin have no idea and that's because they ain't hunters 😊.
Any I wonders what has she been on, looks down and there on top of the knob, 100yds away is Charlie looking at me! She must of been following it!
I put my muffs over my ears, cock the hammer and bring the 94 to shoulder. I get that painted front sight lined up with the rear, well, as best I can it's all blurry these days, steadies the lot on Charlie's shoulder and drops the hammer, down goes Charlie.
I quickly check that fallow doe out in the distance and sure enough on the report she trots into the wood.
Here is Charlie, a nice dog fox but not stinky one bit!

So I carried on working this hill side. I shot many fox's on it over the years but other than a woodcock or two nothing happens until the far end!
I also checked on that doe again, she had come out again to eat!
I've just climbed out of a bowl when in the brush a pheasant cocks up, lifts up and drops again not 50 yards away!
I catch a familiar glimpse of movement in the scrub birch and ready the rifle, I squeak as a mouse and out he comes, cautiously but non the less he just has to stick his head up doesn't he, you can guess the rest....IMG_20240105_090933.webp
Now this is Mr Stinky and just above the farm house.
I made a couple of stands elsewhere and called but no more appeared so switched ammo and tried for a rabbit, that erm went ugly and poor buggsy needed two shots 🤦 Didn't take long though.

On a side not I've shot three fox's this week within 200yards of properties with occupants in and with unmoderated rifles and not one of them have heard a thing!

I always look at this post with interest , so as it’s 2024 and a fresh start I thought I would join in. My neighbour called 2 weeks before Christmas . Do me a favour, could you please come over and see if you can do anything about these f,,,,n foxes as we will be lambing next month. Well I know what farmers are like (as I am one) they say there’s loads , and it turns out to be 1 . Anyway I started going over , and lo and behold he was not wrong. So up until about three quarters of an hour ago I have had 14 foxes And don’t even get my feet dirty . i stand next to the silage clamp where I have 180 degree view of the farm , I don’t even switch the call on they just keep coming. The funny thing is I am always shooting pairs, dog&vixen . The start of this week I shot 4 and again 2 pairs IMG_0863.webp

Blimey, one even brought a drink with him...!

Out from 5:30 this a.m. - baltic, totally still with a great sky, rammed with stars and a crescent moon. Utterly beautiful and nearly worth getting out of bed for, nearly….
Busted yet again by a fox which came up the hedgerow unseen until I caught sight of it in the thermal - exiting at mach3 about thirty yards away and for some reason not stopping…..
Still, a rather nice morning to be out.

That is exactly how I started my Welsh foxing tally, when I finally gained some ground after our move from Cheshire.

Something nice about using the open sights, what calibre is your rifle?

Out with my cousin for a couple of hours last night we saw 6 and shot 3. So nice to get out, now it’s finely stopped raining.

Nice! I ‘spose I could mount a torch on the semi-auto right enough - and only one button to push!

Another one out the bedroom window and first since Christmas Day. Had a couple of glasses of red though and proper wobbly shooting. I think I managed to video it so post it when I get on my laptop 🤣🤣

Not the best shot and ran, but left a satisfying blood trail visible in the thermal at 130m so I knew it hadn’t gone far (40m at best).

Bugger. Missed one this morning with the 30-30. 80 yard shot. It was sleeping next to Mr stinky from yesterday!
No hair or blood and no idea where the bullet landed in all the leaf litter 😞
Seen four this morning and not a single deer.
Time to deploy the twipple I think.

Was gonna go last night but my 204 still isn't as accurate as it used to/should be at 200yds. Going to clean it today & check again tomorrow. Took 22rf instead & shot 14 rats with CB longs.

Well bit of a short one but all worked out , this farmer had asked me to control the foxes and feral pigeons etc but also let some local lads shoot the ferals , ke called me one day saying there was holes in the roof ,I assured him all my shots were taken with girders etc behind them and it was more likely the lads , after that all went quiet would send a txt asking if anything had been seen but nothing returned so thought thats the end of that , just after Xmas I get a txt missus has just seen a fox in the steadings , I return the txt saying I will be down first dry night , and last night went down hard frost but still very soft under foot. this is a very awkward farm to shoot has a main road one side and a small road other and council houses behind, there is a field behing the steadings which is like a small valley and I always try and bring them in here for a safe shot. Got set up and fired up the caller going through various sounds , after about an hour and a half I turn round and see a fox running in from behind , the grandson spins round and says its come through the gate literally 15ds fae us lol but no safe shot in that direction , he then says its away down the track to the steadings , well I know this track goes round in an oval and comes out down the bottom of this field ,and sure enough within minutes there it is coming up the valley , Drone pro on IR on safety of and its looking right at me 80yds away so steady myself and let the 55gn BK sleeping pill on its way to hear sound come back dropped on the spot job done grandson retrieved it large dog head shot so left for farmer , txt him this morn and got reply right away well done did you see anymore so that door is open again so gid night all round View attachment 382158 20240106_194548.webp
