Out last night.

I haven’t put anything on here for a while but this was an odd one last night, I went to a new farm that my mate has taken over due to the owner passing away. Anyway I don’t really know the lay of the land so set up at the back of a shed with the caller out in a grass field, it wasn’t long before I spotted a fox about 600 yards away trotting towards the caller, now I expected it to get to the grass field and and come through a gate into the field about 120 yards from me, but no, it got to the corner and followed the fence up towards me, not wanting to take a shot through a fence I let it come, it stopped when it got to the end of the fence at which point I put it to sleep. A fair size dog for around these parts. Now I knew it was close and guessed it to be about 18 meters, before I left I ranged it with the thermal and that said it was 14 yards, definitely the closest fox I’ve shot with the.243, about an hour later I had another do exactly the same but this one winded me and made its escape. So some daylight wandering needed here to find some better shooting positions. There was also a lot of roe so a few of them will be getting whacked

Pleasant couple of hours walking a steeply banked perm. It was beginning to shape up to be a blank night until this grizzled old warrior threaded his way down through a strip wood from on high. 6.5 creed CZ.

Not sure Nick - but as you say i have had a very successful few years - same with the rats tbh - This time last year well over 350 by now - currently only about 60 - squirrels too - Oh and hardly see a corvid about - All good really !

The vixen that I shot a few days ago was heavily pregnant. I would have thought they would mostly be ungerground with cubs at the moment. Are these vixens that are mentioned recently, mostly pregnant, barren or post whelping?

One I shot was "fat" the other not, possibly barren although at this time of year I wouldn't have laid any money on it without some field surgery, both pairs were in excellent condition.

I managed to get onto a vixen last night I could barely notice she was pregnant until closer inspection ???

I shot a vixen that was being mated on February 2nd last year. I had assumed it was barren, but your post suggests otherwise, perhaps!
Several years ago while following hounds a fellow follower said he had seen cubs above ground between Xmas and New Year. The mating season for foxes must be a drawn out affair, perhpas.

Just got in from a night's ratting with the nephew on my favourite pig farm. We did both units and managed 182 between us. A cheap night's fun, I think my #1 nephew shot 105 so he was chuffed .
Gotta love these modern PCP air rifles, they are great tools for this sort of work.
A nice bonus was a bottle of Glen Scotia Campbeltown Harbour Scotch Whisky that was forced into my hands by the owner of the units, it's nice to know you're appreciated

Enjoy sir, I always like a tipple when I get back indoors, especially if I'm successful... sometimes it's tea & cake...

It's nice to have a few memories created, luckily we shared similar interests, he's just starting his rifle shooting journey with the deer stalking, and we have a love of Cocker spaniels as well.

Talking of early nights, I've got one regular on my camera between 1800 & 1930. Trouble is earliest I can get out is around 2130!!
