Parker Hale / Mauser Mods

Hey all thinking about having some work done to my Parker Hale 1200 Superclip and just wondering if anyone has had similar done or has any input.

Rifle will only be used for target shooting. Also I’d ask the gunsmith to inspect it first and see if he thinks it’s a worthy doner, if the barrel is shot out etc.

So the main thing is I want the stock changed. I’d absolutely love a Bell & Carlson but hard to get over here so I’m looking at the Archangel. As the PH is a Mauser 98 action it I believe it should fit. It also has the advantage of coming with a magazine so I’m assuming it has its own bottom metal too? This is a major advantage for me as I want a more common magazine.

Secondly one of the holes for the scope base is stripped out and as I’m wanting a pictinny rail fitted I’d get this done at the same time. Has anyone had a pictinny rail fitted to there’s? Wondering how it affects the ejection of the spent cartridges.

Finally, I’ll probably get it screwcut for a moderator.

I’m no expert but I’m not sure whether the ArchAngel stock will fit. Although the PH is a Mauser action unless the ArchAngel specifically lists PH actions as fitting you may be disappointed.

If it does fit then you shouldn’t need anything other than everything that comes with the stock!

I suspect it may affect ejection but it’s hard to say how much. You might want to get a friend to video you cycling the bolt as you would normally after a shot. This should give you an indication as to the path that spent brass takes when it leaves the chamber.

A competent gunsmith should be able to drill out the scope base holes and fit a Picatinny rail. They’d also be able to advise of any potential issues with having a Pic rail fitted.

Damn, I’ll send archangel an email to check if they will fit.

Good idea about getting a video took.

At the northern shooting show this weekend, I’m hoping to find a few gun smiths who are happy to work on PH/M98 so I can email them what I’m thinking of.

The PH actions are Santa Barbara made which are Mauser 98 Large Ring. You might need to adjust an aftermarket stock to accommodate the PH safety along the right hand side of the action? Form, GRS and Boyds also do aftermarket Mauser 98 stocks.

GRS for Mauser

Mauser Rifle Stocks | Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks

Hopefully I can find a gunsmith happy to do the fettling.

Ideally, I want synthetic over wood. GRS would be a great option but I really hate the massive palm swell with the finger grooves on the pistol grip. Bell & Carlson are exactly what I want but they won’t ship to uk so Archangel was the next best thing I could find.

Boyds, I do quite like, even if they are wood

I bought a Boyds stock to fit fit to my 1200 v , no problem , likewise I bought a picatinny rail for ph mauser as ph mounts were hard to find , no problem .

I can shed some light on this for you.

The archangel is a piece of crap stock, don't waste your time. IMHO, contact someone like @Edinburgh Rifles and see if they have an old Schultz Larsen target stock that were used at bisley, etc. for long range shooting, it's wood, but damn good target stocks, better than the cheap plastic shjite you buy for under £600. You might even be lucky and find the bedding is already a close or very very close fit to your current recoil lug and large ring front receiver, if not, very easy to remedy at low cost compared to a new full bedding job in a plastic stock. If you are target shooting, why bother with a magazine, there's zero point and you're wasting money on nothing useful. Personally, I MUCH prefer the floorplate, but that's me.

The ejector/bolt stop is on the LHS inside the bolt stop, the extractor is the extractor claw (obviously), a piccy rail will not affect this as they eject sideways not at a 45 deg upwards angle.

regarding the stripped thread, two options. one, have the holes opened up to an 8x40, but your piccy rail will also need to be opened up. alternatively, use 3 screws only and JB weld the piccy rail to the top of the receiver, it will stay there forever!

by going the mauser/schultz larsen target stock route, inletting for the trigger safety arm is a piece of cake as well, or might even be done already.

You don't sound too experienced, and I'd be inclined to say, don't throw a massive amount of money at this project just yet, you will be able to make something good this way, but chances are within long if you continue with target shooting that you will want to upgrade to something fancier

I used to have a Voere 2155 which are built on Spanish 98 actions and I never had a problem using a full length pic rail on it. I got one from EGW in the states. I can't see the PH being any different in that regard. I'm tempted by a 1300 scout but I don't think they take AI mags

When you want to get the action out of the stock make sure that you drift the pin out that holds the mag release lever to reveal the little socket screw at the front of the trigger guard.
When I got my first SC it to me ages to figure out why the stock wouldn't come off when the two main action screws had been removed.
Oh, and don't lose the mag release lever spring like I did!!!

I’m definitely not experienced with fullbore. Plenty air rifle, and a few years smallbore but new to the bigger stuff.

I only do it for fun and relaxation, im not looking to compete and the range I’ll use most often is a max of 300 yards. With that being said, I don’t need some stupendous benchrest stock etc, just something that’s comfortable and I like.

Once I’ve spoken to a gunsmith and got a rough price, if it’s more than Im willing to spend on it, I’ll probably sell it and go for a .308 Remington 700.

unfortunately the PH is currently very uncomfortable to shoot. I’m a leftie and when I shouldered the PH standing it felt fine but as soon as I went prone on the range it just didn’t work for me.

They tend to be a bit long in the stock for me. I'm only 5'9".

If I were you I would sell the PH. Get the most money for it by leaving it unmolested and buy a left handed Remington 700 in 308 ideally with a heavy barrel. Have fun shooting it at targets and if you feel like getting an adjustable stock you have the pick of loads of options rather than the limited choices for the Mauser 98 PH. You will find more Rem 700s in LH than pretty much anything else and there are loads more aftermarket stock choices. A heavy barrel will be a lot easier to shoot accurately than the sporter barrel on the PH. Leave the old PH for someone to use to shoot deer and buy something more suited to shooting targets.

Just my 2p
