Part time professional

I will try and make a list of things needed to be a self employed contractor. 😬

Dsc 1
Dsc 2
Deer management qualification
Quad ticket
Firearms ticket
Driving license
First aid
Register as a food business
Insurance (trade not the stuff you get as a member of a shooting organization)
Register as a business (remember you have to pay tax on any profit. )
You need a accountant if you are not willing to do it yourself.

Rifle
2nd spare rifle
Scope ( recommend a day night one in England remember your not there for sport or fun?
Mounts
Thermal
Sticks
4x4 truck
Trailer
Quad ( with insurance)
Chiller with painted floor, sink
Larder equipment
Rail system
Electric hoist

You have to build a big network of contacts to even get a look in on the contracts.
You have to build a relationship with multiple venison outlets and produce a perfect carcass every time. (this is very important it will generate a big proportion of your income.

There are lots of small things as well but I think this is a good start.
Don't forget Scot nature if your up north

Well i am not typing my view because i haven't got most boxes ticked because i have . Thing is i have only been asked the once about them and that fella was not someone i would have fancied working with after speaking to him as an ass on the phone is a bigger one in person .
Most Estates the head stalker in charge has DSC1 and ATV quals , First aid . Not all of those will be in date. Check out with FC guys although they have to re- take shooting tests the greatest amount will only have the basics to comply.
I find the bigger the contract the more they ask and the big contracts are now getting grants for deer management and the grants hinge on the bits of paper.

Plus the fc stalkers around me are all employed and have all the qualifications which are done with the job and full time and this thread was talking about part time.

Sorry All the quals ? That's just not factual , i have a few mates in the job . TBF there are a heck of a lot of Quals that are just not required , skilled and qualified are two different things though . Lets be fair you could hold a level 2 and have only shot one fenced in park deer and gralloched it , that person isn't going to really come into my context of skilled and there are so many skills and quals ( for instance many stalkers might hold boating quals and that might form a fair part of their daily work on the deer ).

It would be interesting to hear how many on here are part time stalkers and take on contracts of 200- 300 a year and don't have most the kit and paper and like Ive already said the new grants are asking for it.

Sign of the times unfortunately, in some areas you need L1 / 2 manual handling, first aid + F commercial insurance and RA-MS as the norm as well as non lead, just to clear a few muntjac, unfortunately its spreading like a ripple in a pond

moan as much as you like, compliance is here to stay, take a look at L2 reduced to one stalk to encourage people to get it, NRA shooting test upgraded, doctors health check all tightening procedures up, I don’t think it will be long before you will have to have passed NRA training and DSC1 to be able to apply for a section1for sporting purposes, I think you’ve got to take it onboard, just my thoughts of course :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

200 / 300 in a full year isnt really going to warrant anyone with a lot of experiance and kit let alone having taking courses in everything from knitting to open hart surgery out of doors

Very good for you . depending on the terms and conditions and your bosses attitude your on a good crack if you get to treat it as a hobby
I think we have are wires crossed here what I was trying to say in relation to this thread( doing deer management as a part time job) is that to take it to the next level and take on contracts in my experience you need the qualifications and equipment and the contacts to move the deer on.

it might well be like that in the south , i dont know . its not something i have found in the North and most certainly not the case in Scotland ( though a lot of it will come down to who knows who more than any other factor i guess?) . Cant step into another mans shoes to answer further
