Permanent move to Belfast from Surrey

My son did a similar move 18 months ago. It will be an application for certificates in PSNI.
You will need DSC1 to be granted a firearm certificate for deer calibre rifles.
My son took his shotguns with him but was told that technically he shouldn’t have.
Took well over a year, probably due to Covid, to get certificates.

Thank you will start the process asap .

Note - if you have and can prove substantial stalking/fullbore rifle experience you can argue that a DSC is not required. PSNI use this as a “filter” to discourage rifle ownership and of course BDS et al love it because of the ££££!
As a lifetime NI resident I put a case in without any formal ologies and was granted 6.5 and 308 so do not be afraid to argue if you can meet the proof set out above.
good luck.

My son has plenty stalking experience and has had his firearm certificate for 19 years. PSNI would not grant for deer calibre rifles without the DSC 1.
BASC NI were involved and were to fight his case, but again due to Covid, this never happened.
He’s sitting DSC 1 in August!

Hope everything works out ! Good luck to all of us :)

Appreciate the reply , my fear is not to accidentally become a gun smuggler , because no matter how simple we think it is there is no un-ringing that bell . Thank you .
PSNI are very efficient and helpful but a tiny bit averse to granting full bore rifle certs.
On a practical note NI isn’t particularly large, you may find that you have to travel to the ROI for some of your shooting, which will definitely require a visitors firearms cert and maybe a deer hunting licence.
Best of luck with the move.

I would agree that they have improved. There was a query on my last variation, but it was easily dealt with via email, and it was processed very quickly. As above hope it works out for you without any hassle.

I am wondering UK it's still mentioned as practically not really exsist or at least so complicated particularly here in NI. However few years back I was about to move to Scotland and have been told by PSNI that my FAC is recognised by both police forces in England and Scotland, all I had to do is move there and inform local authorities for my address. And when is time for renewal just apply from new address

Can’t wait to see how they react to your NI valid .45 pistol cert in the rest of the U.K.
😁😁🔫🔫

Other calibres are available of course. Only in NI, we are fussy that way!

A bit off topic, but I've always wondered why the residents of NI are allowed to possess handguns while we on the mainland aren't. Are we not a United Kingdom (OK, don't answer that one...)? Are the handguns just ofr target use, or for personal protection as well?
