Permission.

Just a question here in regards to permission.
do the majority on here pay* i.e ££ for perms.
or are the majority of guys on here helping out in other ways.. i.e pest control fencing.. help arou d rearing or beating etc?
I know of guys on both sides of the fence. just wondered what the majority was.
East Lothian?

I understood that stalking over there was mainly a help yourself affair. Certainly that seems to be the local tradition…

I can only seem find paid stalking 😞 i pay £95 a month for roe stalking on 2500 acres. Unsure how many other members there is. I think between 12-16 possibly.

Not shot anything off there for 7 outings now and its getting quite depressing. I think its very pressured not just with shooters but all the walkers/cyclist during the day

£95 a month! Wowza. That's quite a hefty price for 7 ducks. I wish you luck finding a new permission. I'll not pay a penny for pest control, but per others, do help the farmer out with various bits and pieces from pulling sheep out of brambles, to estate planning, running the pheasant shoot.

Well your syndicate manager is taking the **** mate. There won’t be a deer on that ground if you have 15 people all wanting their lions share. Wasting your money

It's not too bad. I have done well through the winter.

Half the guns, only come up from England maybe 2 times a year.

The deer just seem to have disappeared these last few months, really struggling on there and they are so spooky.

You’ll likely have twice the number of syndicate members than you think then 😂

England, to Elgin! Don’t they have deer problem in England they should be focussing on? 😂 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I wouldnt know mate. A. dont know many people shooting/stalking wise yet.
and B . farmers i do work for an know have there ground dished out already.

hence the reqson im asking these questions. DSC booked for July. so trying to find my feet and get on somwhere. i wont mind paying aslong as not getting robbed. with 3 young kids. as per @tommustoe comment. i think my Mrs would kill me if i forked £95 a month for stalking though. 🤦‍♂️😂. sounds allot over a month. but im well aware anual average is about £1000 which doesn't work ot much more. (if anyone can explain that to a woman please feel free) but im not that brave 😂

I have pest permissions with a few farms and keeper friends.
No deer on them. Only shoot a couple of deer per year as freezer fillers. I just do paid stalks as i cant justify the price of a syndicate place.
As we all know land/permissions are at a premium in the UK. So if you have stalking land, good luck to you.

I pay £134 a year for a small syndicate, 300 ish acres (5 members all friends) lots of roe on it, also picked up 3 permisions that run along along the hill as we shoot fox for all 3 farmers.
also have about 1800 acres on various farms this is all free as I do pest control for them

sounds perfect mate!! keep hold. chances like that dont come around nowadays!

There is stalking to be had for nothing. The landowner is just pleased to have someone on the ground controlling the deer, the degree of control depends on the landowners wishes. I know plenty who just want a few taking to keep ‘on top of them’ but we are talking roe country, not land with the herding species or muntjac. I am also a member of a syndicate, it is decent money but a big estate local to me, all roe again but plenty of them.

Yep. That gets very old, very quickly. I was a members of a syndicate that was pretty similar. The deer were practically nocturnal due to walkers, cyclists, etc. And weekend stalking was and absolute waste of time.

My current roe stalking is free, but with the expectation that I look after young cropping. I've also just joined a syndicate an hour or so away that has some fantastic topography that'll give me a change of scene, and the chance of a couple of nights away every few weeks, as well as the potential opportunity for a red now and again

Free.

l have about 1,000 acres of agricultural land with couple of spinneys, bordered by woods in a couple of places. No public footpaths, which is bliss.

My farmers get a fair proportion of the venison, plus a bottle of single malt for them and a bottle of champagne for the missus each Christmas.

Idyllic.

Out of interest, where was this syndicate?

All free for me, although I do give out some beers/wine/tubs of chocolates around Christmas. Being able to weld is something that is occasionally called upon and really I like welding things so it's never a chore!

I mostly shoot my own land but there is not a damn thing free about it. Those of you who have sporting right or permission are getting a better deal than some of you may realize. While I'm working, I'm thinking of hunting and while I'm hunting, I'm thinking of all the work that needs doing, and how can we afford it. Careful what you wish for.
