Perruque quandary

I have a good perruque animal on my ground. He appears very sporadically on trail camera because he is so transient.

Firstly I know he is a priority to shoot on welfare grounds, however catching up with it is not straight forward. He resides in a very dense woodland which is super noisy to walk through.

But, I know there is a demand for people wanting to shoot a perruque. Do I shoot it myself get it mounted and sell it. Shoot it and keep it or Sell the whole deal. Shoot and keep?

If I was to sell the stalk and head what would be the going rate?
Thanks for your help.perruque.webp

As you mentioned welfare grounds that in my book is the route to take, my bits of ground don't have Roe so not much up on them but it is not "normal" re all the vast amount of pictures posted with out that type of head.

Ah what the hell. By the sounds of it you haven’t seen it to shoot it. Sell the opportunity to the highest bidder. Gets bums on seats to shoot it if seen.

Having seen maggot infestations in these, I’d happily shoot it at night, with a thermal, night vision etc. to my mind it’s no different to an animal having a broken leg etc. shoot it whenever you can under welfare. If somone wants to pay you to do that, take their money.

Guess the welfare bit is out the window only the well how much

If someone is willing to pay to sit out and wait for it, as the OP hasn’t had the opportunity to take it out. You could see this as putting an assassin in place to take care of the welfare issue. Just because they are paying doesn’t make it any less humane. Unless they are a crap shot not withstanding 🤣

On the face of it that sounds reasonable, but the downside is that the OP might be tempted to pass up an opportunity to shoot it himself while waiting to find a suitable client. That would be poor welfare.

Sounds like a "you were doing 30 and a half miles an hour" in a 30 answer.

Interesting conundrum.

Obviously he needs to be larder bound ASAP, but I can’t see an issue with taking a paying guest provided it’s done quickly, and as said there isn’t opportunities passed on.

Most serious sporting agents will have clients in mind for this kind of thing. They’d be able to find a client in short order, and it’ll be for a few grand. Quite clearly if they can’t get one sorted quickly, it’s not a goer.

Roe generally don’t tend to be that transient at this time of year (depends on your permission size I suppose), likely just not very active. It’ll be findable given time, and as the month rolls on it’ll come to the squeak, quite possibly will already so that might negate the issues in approach.

Can you post a photo when the deed is done?

I shot one in ‘06 when I was very new to stalking, I had no idea what it was. Being candid if I saw one now I’d make a couple of calls, see what I could sort….but one way or the other it’d be in the chiller in a couple of days.

Noting the challenges of thick woodland, hard to catch up with the buck etc, I think that would be challenging with unknown guests as you'd have to be with them all the time so effectively only a single rifle and no benefit over just being out yourself. There's a financial benefit I guess, but noting the low probability of seeing the buck I don't think it's a great business model and doesn't do much for welfare of the buck. If you could safely have multiple rifles on the ground at one time then this would multiply the chances of success but is obviously a lot harder to achieve. Plenty of cull days operate safely and successfully in this manner and that's the sort of thing I'd consider.

Whilst it could be worth a good few quid to someone, I just don't think it's realistic unless you can get a better understanding of its movements and increase the chances of success should you take a paid client out.

Now I didn’t say pass up on any opportunity to take the animal out.

Bums on seats and what’s wrong with someone making money from deer.

Hardly, quite happy to say outright sell the opportunity. It’s just that an opportunity. Nothing wrong with making money is there. I didn’t say leave the animal. Happy to disagree.

Personally I’d just craic on myself and ensure that if there are any welfare issues that he is taken at the first opportunity.

It sounds like a challenging enough scenario without the additional complication of a guest.

Good luck whatever you decide, certainly will be a interesting buck to see when he is added to your cull.
