Pine Marten's symbolically-charged drilling.

Yes I know what you mean about military kit and especially that with Nazi associations, but I thought it was an interesting annecdote.

Oh it is indeed an interesting anecdote! Now why exactly anyone thought that a 9.3x74R would be an ideal survival gun for a pilot downed in the wilds of Kent, I'm not sure.

It wouldn't have been. I think that I have mentioned before that such guns were only issued to the Africa Corps and to multi crewed aircraft.

I will be absolutely honest and admit that while I have no affinity for the Third Reich or the Nazi's the fact that a firearm bore such markings would not offend me, I would merely regard it as a reminder of a terrible time in history. I know some guys go out and deliberately seek out guns that bear the Nazi insignia, why I don't know, but its not something that either interests me or upsets me. I recall an auction being advertised at Gleneagles many years ago when one of the doubles on sale was a 7x57r rifle once owned by Herman Goerring. I fancied the rifle at the time and expected it to go for quite a high sum but in actual fact it didn't go anywhere as high as imagined.

Just a thought but can you resize 8x57JRS brass down to 7x57 Rimmed dimensions?
I've looked at their specs and I'm guessing it's doable?
Only reason I ask is I've got a bag of 100 that's been sitting on the shelf for 5 years. No idea where they came from...

Orvil I don't know if it is possible to do it but I suppose so, but why because 7x57r isn't that rare other than perhaps in this country. Save your 8x57irs for it's proper use as it's proably not worth the trouble.
If you are wanting to dispose of the 8x57 what would you be asking for it and what manufacturer is it please?

Latest news from the helpful people at William Evans: the shop in Germany is expecting the export permit in the post. It will then take two or three days to ship it over. So it should arrive exactly when I leave for France for a week. I may even cross the container ship over the channel.

As I've said before, it's lucky I was schooled in angling because everything seems to require vast amounts of patience.

PM. all good things.........etc.Really looking forward to seeing the photos that Iam hoping you will post as soon as possible. Regards SBM

When I was growing up that was known as "having something to look forward to". At the time I never realised it was a euphemism.

I always ensure that I have something to look forward to! But I generally have to look quite far forward to sad things.

SBM, I shall of course post some pictures when I have it and have had a chance to clean and polish it a bit. I shall pick up a box of cartridges in France next week to so I can have a play with it at some stage. Finally, I've been offered an opportunity by a generous SD member to use it properly on a day in January, using ALL the barrels on the same day! Which was the justification I needed for its' purchase. That will lead to an entirely separate story I hope.

Now that is something good to look forward to for you, and for us to read about mate!! :thumb:

Oh I am very, very much looking forward to it! Things are finally going to come together on that (and other fronts). In two weeks, I'm off for my one and only driven shoot of the year and YPM's first. The week after that, my first day's walked-up shooting with my friends, on my initiative as I redirect our efforts from seven seasons of almost fruitless wildfowling. Three weeks after that, off to Malc's to try out my DL1 reloads on deer for the first time and hopefully find a roe doe for the Festive Season. This marks the start of my Christmas holidays! THEN the drilling day, again with my friends (I'm building common experiences of success to stoke up enthusiasm for the future, you see). A month and a bit after that, CWD with Malc. Then I run out of shooting plans so I'll need to start planning yet another go at the roe bucks.

I often say (after a few beers I may add) to my relatives when they moan about not having anything to do and waste their lives watching the soaps, that I always have something new to look forward to in the future. Currently within the shooting world I still have many firsts to achieve and should I ever (though I doubt it) get bored of this I will find other new past times til the day I die!

After a few more drinks (much to my wife's distain!!) I then tend to liken the new exciting experiences I still have with the first time I felt a pair of ......................................................

That’s clearly for a new thread and probably in “Off Topics”or even “Legal Issues” but as you invite:

A school playing field on the South Downs c1968. Bit of a scrum as I recall so no idea of name!

Pine Marten - Did you get your drilling, yet, or still working through all the paper?

Don't let the holidays keep you from at least punching some paper, smelling gunsmoke, and reporting to us your first impressions.

Hello Southern. It's still in Germany which is really annoying me now as I need it for 10th January and need to be able to zero it and familiarise myself with it beforehand. I'm going to make a fuss today as the dealer is closed on Mondays.

You may be amused to learn that Bisley Camp, where my shooting club is located, closes for the Christmas period, just when I'm actually free to go to the damned place! I may have to ask Malc if I can use his range during a break in proceedings as a failsafe.

Update: the sticking point is that the German dealer insists that he cannot obtain an export licence without a copy of the UK import licence. But the Dept. of Business, Innovation and Skills Import Licencing Branch says that no such licence is needed as both my FAC and William Evans' RFD are sufficient authority and as such it will not be issued.

So f### knows how we're going to resolve that.

PM - Have a look on at the notes on the back of your FAC, note E:

"Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs will notify the Chief Officer of Police who issued this certificate of any firearm which is imported to
Great Britain on the Authority of this certificate" Try and get that translated into German as it explicitly says your cert has authority.

- And make sure you read your cert in future...

Good luck,

ATB,

Scrummy

Suggest getting a letter from the Dept of Business, Innovation and Skills stating that fact - hopefully with mucho official headings and stamps on it - send it off to Germany with copies of your FAC, (EFP as well?), the dealer's RFD certificate, vat registration document, and see what they say to that?
