Hullo All,

Im looking into getting a pair of the above. Im thinking tweed, (not much else on offer) and must be lined, would ideally spend no more than about £100. Any recomendations?

Thanks

Sam

No-one?

Rekon I must be the only fool on this wave length!

I am a middle-aged fool, and I was going to give you www.alexander-james.co.uk as a source, but their plus 2/3/4's cost £125 for ready-made and unlined. They have a good range of tweeds.

They are good value, though. I got my shooting suit there a couple of years ago: Coat, plus-3's waistcoat and cap semi-bespoke from 22oz Islay tweed for under £500.

Thanks for the links. Im now looking at the Southerland Sporting Company. they seem to offfer a really good range

I take it you mean Sutherland sporting ? A pair of + fours from them will last for years .Get them made to measure and goretex lined .They will send you samples of the tweed go for keeper weight you won't regret it .

try john brockelhursts in bakwell, top quality kit made to measure if needed. they may have your size ready to go.

Beware fully lined plus fours.I wear them for work and decided to have a pair fully lined. The problem was i stalk on fairly steep ground and everytime i tried to crawl my knees kept sliding about on the lining making it difficult to get agood shooting rest,i cut the lining out at mid thigh and that sorted the problem.
Cheers Hummel

Other than keeping with tradition, what advantages does wearing short trousers offer over more conventional clothing? I'm firmly in the camp that thinks they are a ridiculous, out-dated garment, by the way.

Tweed is warmer than man made fabrics when wet, it breathes and is not to hot in warmer weather, +4s probably better than+3
s for stalking, when crawling on wet ground the knees get wet but when you stand up the wet patch is below the knee and will shed any water on to the ground not down into your boots like normal trousers.

For low ground stalking I usually ware a pair of deerhunter trousers, but would not go hill stalking in any thing but plus fours.

Breeks are perfect for stalking and can be worn with wellingtons and boots. I cannot understand why any one would not try them and for the ones that have they don't go back to traditional trousers

Harry Mac -

As above really, gaiters I find very uncomfortable in normal trousers compared to Breeks. Thats why most of the serius/regular Hill stalkers use them still. And for me its function over form.

Im actually a big gaitor fan. I use the Black Islander jobs, and they are great - I'd rather wear boots and them than wellies alot of the time! I tried the Macgaitors but found them to let water in, and very warm.

Boots, socks, plus 3's and gaiters! I can't see the reason for the extra layer of cloth under the gaiters that trousers would give you? And trousers don't hang over your gaiters to shed water either.

Sorry gents, but I'm still in that camp. I've done quite a few Winter deployments to Northern Norway and inumerable cold, wet exercises in my time and never yet has the QM's department seen fit to issue any of us with short trousers.

HM, and we all know that you are given the best equipment, no expense spared, top of the line,........... like the SA80 ;)

Given that most Stalkers can buy what they want equipment wise, is it not odd that what you consider out moded and outdated equipment still sells well. Can it be that it actually performs well? And if you were to buy gore-tex lined or similar traditional plus 3's or 4's, and they were to last you many, many years they might just prove a little more durable than your issued kit too.

As a "full bodied" individual (ex prop forward) I often find that the more traditional wear gives me a little more room around the thighs and "dance floor".

Ask the 4 guys I shoot pheasants with in North Wales they all wear breaks over wellies I wear plus fours over wellies,
There is normaly no differance but after wading through 4 feet deep snow drifts this winter which one of us had dry feet and who could not get there wellies off for the amount of compacted snow inside
