Pocket knife

Hi guys I’m looking for a pocket knife just for general work. I use to have a nice knife that was black and locked. Always kept a nice edge but being black I lost it in the fields!
Anyone advise me on a pocket knife that’s fairly cheap but holds a good edge?

Opinel is a good shout for a cheap knife that holds its edge ok.
I also carry a spyderco which isn’t going to break the bank, and it’s a bl**dy good knife.

Iv got an opinel carbon which I seem to be able to keep shaving sharp. Great for slicing things and I have a Kaliber which is thicker for more rough work.

Only if you can find someone to sell you one without the sheath, the sheath adds another £30.
I have six and bought full size sheaths from E Bay so they have a choice to carry open sheathed or as a pocket knife, I got them for prizes on the Boar shoots I attend.
They have a ten year warranty, not sure whether that is against loss or sharpness

I'd suggest the Ontario Rat 1 - AUS-8 stainless, under £50, available in a myriad of colours, plain or semi-serrated blade, tip up or tip down carry, liner lock, easy to sharpen - all round good deal.

I have a bit of collection ... used to change up my carry fairly often, but have been stuck on a 284 Buck Bantam for a few years now. I was travelling by air with only carry on luggage, but would be driving back home at the end of my travels ... couldn't take a knife in my luggage, and couldn't be without a knife in my pocket, so I bought the little lock blade soon after arriving at my destination. I liked it so much that I have acquired a couple spares since, but strange as it seems to me, I haven't yet lost the original.

Seeing this thread I went and dug out my old opinel I had when I started stalking roe in Scotland more years ago than I care to remember, it’s half the width and 1/2 inch shorter than when it was new, looking at it, I think I would rather lose an Emberleaf instead of this 2 Bob razor of a knife, all about memorys on this one

love this knife

Buck folders are some of the best value knives you can buy IMO. I have a Buck Vantage I use as my rabbit pauncher and the edge you can get on it and the way it keeps an edge is superb.

Personally, if it's a general purpose knife, I always pick a liner lock mechanism. It's the strongest design, easy to clean and doesn't get clogged with grit and dust when it's rattling around in your pocket.

Got a lot of time for Maserin knives too. Generally dearer than Buck but very good quality. Something like this would make a fine general purpose pocket knife:

I find the Opinel are good. For general use and to be UK legal to carry I tend to go for a swiss army spartan, they keep a great edge, have screwdriver, bottle openers etc. and are only £20-22. I also have and like the lambs foot and many others I have in a drawer but miss the extras on a swiss army knife when I take another.

Mine is a little more weather-beaten. This is a Tina grafting knife. Still manufactured in Germany, this one belonged to my late father-in-law, who was a market gardener in Kent. I imagine it got through a lot of veggies over the years!
