post a pic of your rifle

Had a Ruger stutzen in .243 great woodland rifle, crap at any distance though(factory ammo). I bet the 270 kicks like a mule! :D :cuckoo::stir:

The stuzen seems to be ok in all weathers, I cant say I have had an issue that was the rifles fault.
As for the Blaser..I think you have read the reviews :).

.270 does have a certain belt to it, the term brace yourself comes to mind. It is quite spectacular at dusk, the column of flame is quite a sight..though I only see an orange glow in the scope. Still, I manage with it quite well, even though I am not a big chap by any imagination, the recoil is not unbearable. If I think about it, I only notice it really when sighting in. Almost oblivious on a deer.

Hi .30 Newton

Tell us more about your 30 Newton, I didn't think I would see one of those on here, the Ruger must of been a re-barrel?

I was in love with an old Magnum Mauser in 30 Newton once. It sat on the dealers shelf until it got sold and rebarreled. The cartridge dates from pre WWI and is somewhere in the power range of a 300 Win M but in a longer cartridge. Looked like a 30-06 on steroids with a case capacity about like a 300 H&H. I'm not sure what you'd form brass from, off hand, as the head diameter is (if I remember right) bigger than a half inch in diameter! I wasn't in love with the cartridge as much as that old maggie Mau.~Muir

The .30 Newton is an old cartridge developed by Charles Newton and Fred Adolph around 1910. It was the first beltless magnum. The case is 64 mm's long. I have made brass from the 8x68S case. The new .375 Ruger case has the exact same dimensions as the .30 Newton case, only a little longer and can also be used as a parentcase. I also have some original brass I use.

Performance is close to the .308 Norma Magnum, the .30 Newton has about 5 grs more capacity. It is a much better designed case than the .300 WM with it's short neck. Original .30 Newton rifles had a special rifling which kept the pressure down and gave higher velocity. I have friend who has an original .30 Newton and he gets 3365 fps with a 180 grs bullet and 77.6 grs of R22.

I get about 3100 fps with a North Fork 180 grs bullet and 73 grs Norma MRP.

The .30 Newton is a very good old cartridge with excellent performance. Chas Newton was an ballistic genious and way ahead of his time. He also had a .35 Newton which will outperform the .358 Norma Magnum.

He also designed cases like the 5.6x52R, .22-250, .250 Savage and .25-06.

My Ruger is a rebarrel. It was originally a .30-06. I opended the bolt face and fitted a new barrel and A B&C stock. It's a great shooter.

Thanks .30 Newton

I was well aware of the history of the cartridge; it struck me strange that somebody would use one and the fact that it was based on a new model rifle. But your explanation of the brass you use etc makes sense. I guess that the Newton is about as powerful a cartridge you could get on a 30-06 length action?

Many thanks again

Hmmm I didn't know they still made them? Our club sec had one until he tried some ones hand loads which blew the top of the action and bent the steel Pecar scope like a banana. Apart from being shaken up he was OK. God only know what was in that .223 load. The rifle saved him from injury by failing in a safe manner divierting the forces upwards and away from the shooter.

Oh sorry to say .30 Newton, but the .280 Ross beat the newton to the beltless magnum title by at least 3 years ;)
