Powder prices

One of my local dealers was wanting £60 per tub of Varget. Recently bought a tub of Alliant for £50. Extortionate! They blame the prices on carriage costs but I think they've just got a monopoly going.

Luckily just found another dealer with very reasonable prices.

Jumping Jehoshaphat!!

Yes we are being ripped off, Lovex and PB Clermont (Ramshot) powders are around £20 a Kg landed here in the UK in bulk.

Over the last couple of years I've bought a load of Lovex powders at £30-£35/Kg and the chap I bought it off was still making around 40% profit on it.

Bear in mind with regard to "it's the high shipping costs" that a huge amount of the powders sold in the US aren't made there, they're shipped from Australia, so if they can be shipped that far and still be sold at around $26-$30 a Lb with both the retailer and their distributor making a decent profit that should give you an idea of the actual costs.

Or maybe I'm just being cynical in my old age :)

yes some gunshop owners are robbing gits, not so long ago I was in a shop, and picked a kilo of v140 up, and it was £78, but the date on it was 2011, old stock for new prices, and he said it was down to brexit, so I said did we leave the eu in 2011, he just laughed, did I purchace anything of him nooooooooooo, so beware some will take your last penny of you.

Just to clarify, would that have to be orders for the same powder, or a mixed order?

I would be interested in 5-10 x 1lb tubs of various powders, and willing to travel to say Salisbury/Taunton to collect, if anyone else in interested in doing the same.

Mixed powders are fine
ideally from one source
three powders from three sources cost three delivery charges
on the whole orders to me cost £40-65 just to deliver

it becomes very hard to discount a few kilos on that basis as I have to wash £65 through the price per kilo to break even
larger the order the more viable

not averse to delivering when trips are doubled, trebled up for function.
pays for the trip, saves on shipping or collection of restricted goods

i just did 500 mile round trip today but saved over £350 in shipping for various goods and items

Could you tell us which powders come from each source(no names)? Perhaps more than one make comes from one source.
It will be difficult to find people who all want the same powder, but a group might all want Hodgdon powders of different types.
If they are going to dry up due to REACH, then users(especially target shooters) will have to think of quite a few tubs of their favourite powder if they want to keep using it.
I'm thinking you will want to set out with perhaps 200 tubs or more to deliver on a long trip.
I've had interest by PM from one other SD member, but that's all at present.
Perhaps you could accumulate a list of requirements and try to plan a trip.
Service areas close to junctions might be appropriate.

Food for thought!

I'll start it off.
Hogdon H4895 x 4 (if reasonably priced which will obviously depend on the total reached)

Put me down for 10 tubs of Hodgdon powders and IMR 7828ssc. Varget would be nice, if it's available. Varget, H4831sc, Benchmark, BL-C(2), H380, CFE-223, IMR 7828ssc mix and match with what others would like, to make up orders to attract best discounts.

I understand that somewhere in/around London can be a collection point. That should be attractive to a few more people.

UK VAT is not an expense for a registered trader, because it is all claimed back. Their expense is having money tied up until the item is sold. VAT is a consumer tax.

Despite the exchange rate, we have become accustomed to paying £1 for what $1 would buy in the US, but things don't seem that way any more.

That's correct, but as the customer, we have to pay the VAT when applicable. The trader if registered for VAT (most will be) can certainly claim it back, but if the product is VATable, the trader must apply it.

I'm aware that H4350 appears to be in short supply in the USA, but other Hodgdon/IMR propellants are readily available.

I'd be interested in 10kg of RS60 dependant upon 'discount' - i.e. similar to US price breaks.

All should bear in mind that this is a public forum and be aware of the limits on holding and or transporting smokeless shooting powder without an Explosive Licence and or Dangerous Goods Licence before incriminating themselves.

PMs might be a good idea.

And before anyone starts, propellant IS and explosive.:old:

10kg is within personal limits.

Isn't it nice to know someone is always watching over you and willing to bring to everybody's attention when they think you have broken the law when a PM would have been more appropriate just in case you have :D
