PPU Ammunition

used it in my 243 once upon a time cheap accurate ammo but stopped using it as it was making a mess of the moderator black sludge tar was everywhere in mod.stopped using it and everything was fine must of been cheap powder and unburnt.also found an issue with some rounds not chambering right and bolt tight to close.pay cheap Get cheap I suppose.

Always grouped at about 1” in my T3 .308. Nothing special, just average. Can be tight to close the bolt.

Anyone using it?
I am using the brass to load 22 H and 308's . It seems to be good quality. I am using their 7mm 174 gr soft points in my 7mag and they may be the ugliest bullets ever made with the possible exception of Remingtom Cor-Lokt's but they shoot great

I haven't seen loaded PPU ammo in the local stores but I believe you can order it. I would buy their products based on my current experience..

Used a box on the range to compare with Sako .243 100g gameheads.
Through my Shultz and Larsen.

Grouped as well as the Sako at100m but dropped considerably more at 200m.

Have not used on live quarry, and would probably only do so in circumstances where I know shots will be limited in distance, high seat in the wood for example.
Shot two muntys with it in the last two weeks, from a high seat and no great distance 60m and 85m.
Very large exit wounds and allot of carcass damage. Perhaps the head construction ?
Usually take my .222 on munty only outings but on these occasions had to be prepared for roe as well.
I will probably use up what I have left on paper and switch back to Sako.

I use it exclusively for stalking since the bullets don’t disintegrate. I get 8mm groups at 100m out of fairly worn .243 so there’s nothing wrong there.

I have had two issues, some with 308 which rotted after 15years, I have seen the same with modern Sako, Lapua, Norma, Winchester, Remington so I suspect there is something going on with modern powders or primers.

The second was really bad batch of 7x57, few hundred FPS different between some loads, bought new and used within a year (over covid) so it’s not age related. Had to pull the last 40 when I realised how bad it was. Privi never bothered to respond.

Like I said at the start however, it usually works really well and I understand the issues has been resolved? Either way, they are the only company making certain obscure calibre ammunition so I will continue to use them, even it is sometimes only to get the components.

Need to practice on Short Siberia with my 6.5X55, have some old Privi never used in this gun will find out. Then buy a new box hopefully it will like them. The price of Norma a box is about TRIPLE!

BC.

Interesting comment re not disintegrating. Apologies for silly question but, how did you establish this? Would this account for what I see as rather excessive exit wounds?

Been using PPU for years in my 22250 in both 50 and 55gr accurate and drops them on the spot same with 243 and now using in my 6.5x55. If it shoots straight and drops them clean I don’t buy in to the bullet snobbery - use what works.

.243 Recovered bullets from carcasses when it’s close, sub-80yds on Reds, they are usually against the far skin, about 50-70% retention.
When it’s further, over 120yds (don’t know exactly what the magic number is, just taking the average over the years) it usually exit clean, the lack of lead in the wound channel and small exit hole indicate a mostly intact bullet.

I once shot a Roe at about 40yds and it made a total mess, bullet was still travelling way too fast and made a 4” exit hole behind the shoulder. No, I don’t take headshots out of principle.
Other Roe at 100-150yds just the usual 1” hole straight through.

When large bone is struck, it still penetrate 100% but on occasion the core would separate. Not an issue as long at it penetrate the entire vital area.

It would be better in a calibre not travelling quite so fast.

Thanks for that , very interesting.

The same as with any other ammunition brands, some rifles like them others do not. Both of my .308’s group brilliantly with it and the 150gr SP are deadly so happy days!
