Quad sticks

Any more info on the upcoming new Viperflex?

Glendine,

Do you have any more details on the new version? From peoples’ comments the Vipers seems to be very good so what can be improved?

I’m slowly upgrading from the faithful kit that has seen me through the last 10yrs of stalking (Mora and Cold Steel knives to Casstrom etc) and I’m considering a set of Viper Flex over my original B&Q home made quad sticks. I’m still on the first set of these and they have served me very well. Better value you won’t find when I think how many deer they have accounted for but people seem to rate the Vipers and I like the idea of being able to collapse them down.

Thanks in advance,

T.

I bought a set of the viper flex after using primos trigger sticks for a few year. Would never go back to the primos now.

I tried a set of the standard viper flex sticks at an event. Lovely, nice & solid.

As I have an ambition to travel a bit, I thought I'd go with the elite collapsible version.

Big mistake! it might not matter to a lot of shooters but I'm 6ft 5 and these are too short. I think the chap who sold them to me even mentioned them being shorter than the standard ones but I clearly wasn't paying enough attention at the time.

The original thought around a travel set is still valid so I'm dithering whether to make my own or extend these to get some height to avoid the hunched shooting stance showed earlier in the thread.

They come in a XL format that covers folk up to 200cm so that should cover you?

DOH !!!

I guess it's time to ask the supplier for a change, not sure whether that means swapping the whole unit or just part.

Thanks

The Limulus ones are built to your size & right/left-handedness & are very good indeed. Certainly just right for my 6'2" frame.

All the different makes will hold your rifle very steady but remember that you're going to be carrying them & using them as a walking aid for steadying yourself & pushing foliage out of the way for about 99% of the time so I'd be looking for something that's easy to carry & that is quiet (both to open & if it touches a branch/stone etc), hence my preference for the wooden ones.

I do prefer a 'v-grip' to really lock the rifle in to help manage the recoil/flip of my unmoderated rifle as opposed to the trend of having a flat at the front, allowing lateral movement of the rifle. With the Limulus sticks if I find myself in a tight corner with no option to further re-position the sticks then I can place my hand in the 'V' to permit lateral movement of a few degrees.

I too would highly recommend the Limulus sticks they are fantastic and can be used at any height kneeling or standing and can follow a moving target with practice are really well made and super strong to boot, Tony has got the design just perfect they get 5 stars from me..........:thumb:

If they're like new, then LMK if you want to sell them & how much.

Thanks all. My concern is being able to achieve this position:

Rather than this:

where sight picture/alignment is forced and unnatural (to me). The 'hunch' also compromises stability as the shooter becomes another hinge, leading to up-down movement during the shot.

Probably now now just a case of 'try before your buy'. Thanks for the advice ntl.

To be honest, both those photos show very poor shooting positions!
The only rigid part of you body is your skeleton - so use it wisely!
The first picture shows a nice straight back which is good and supportive which is great. If you feel you need to hunch, then move the sticks closer together which makes them higher!
Both photos show bent left arms. Widen the top of the sticks so that you can lock the arm straight and rigid!
Both photos also show bent knees! DO NOT bend your knees as it makes you body floppy and not rigid! If you need to get a bit lower, lock your knees and widen your stance, much the same as altering height with your sticks.
Foot positioning is also key. Your sticks can only really move fore/aft (pitch). Having your feet close together or side by side is therefore not an aid to stability! Having a wide stance with your feet fore and aft with locked out knees is!
I give a bit of coaching to DSC 1 students before their shoot test and the results are amazing! The 'experienced' shooters often have some really awful techniques and habits that do them no favours!
If you've not done it, a short session with a decent shooting coach can seriously alter you ability!
