Quad winch

Something like this?

It looks very close, I think the winch supplied back in 2010 had metal rollers on, but that is sort of thing you want. You will need some rope to reach 100 yds too, or to add a snatch block so you can up the pull x2.

An electric winch on a quad is not a deer recovery winch as you envisage. Most 2/3000lb ATV winches only come with 15m of cable (get Dyneema it’s safer and easier to live with) and are for getting the quad out of trouble. High loads draw high currents and max pull only comes on the first layer of the winch. You are better off putting a fixed long line through a snatch block and pulling the deer out with the quad. That said, I have one on the TRX420 and it’s recovered no end of things but not deer! Quad Bike Wales do mounts for most quads, fit an isolator and check that it works frequently so you know it will when you need it. I use mine as the front restraint in the trailer so it gets used every time I load the quad giving confidence of reliable use. I’ve had Warns but have now had 3 Superwinch/Winchmax ATV/truck winches and they have proved reliable. I’m just fitting another to my Discovery Sport.

Ok, I missed the fact that this winch is for synthetic, whereas back in 2010 it was steel. :D

Yes the synthetic is the 'upgrade' as in more expensive in the line
I've never used a winch which is equipped with synthetic, but I can see where it would help.

The only down side is rocks etc. in the way. If you haven't got that sort of thing in the way then something so light has got to be an advantage. :thumb:

I’ve got one on my quad, using dynema, far far better than steel cable in most every way.
But, a couple of things already mentioned.
1, it won’t coil 100 yards in a month if Sundays, I suspect mine is more like 20-25 yards
2, for recovery of deer it’s far from ideal, yeah it will do it, but they don’t like it and it most certainly does run the battery flat depending on the situation your winching in, they really are more to help pull the quad out.

The drums build up a fair bit of heat, not such an issue with cable but the stream takes the heat and doesn’t like it much.

Your best option by a country mile would be get the 100 yard rope and a snatch block/pulley, anchor that to something and pull your rope through it with the quad, takes minutes to set up (time spent is gained by faster recovery than a winch).
I’ve also got one in the back of my pickup for pulling the bigger lumps into the back, but it’s a much bigger battery and alternator so copes better with short pulls.

@ColinBr x2 will add x2 length using a snatch block than a dead pull, but would be just right with one on a short pull stuck in a ditch etc.
Not sure of Red weights your way but you shoot 2 then the choice is pull them twice or 2 in the sled.
Real life is (tagged in) @dlz90 as he winches a lot of deer.
Battery power (Length of cable to winch) with continuous use with supplied cables

If the winch does not have "free spool" then you will be winching out your 100 yds then back.

Small Chinese motor getting hot as if it does not have free spool then it is working all the time.

If you are on your own the winch remotes are about 6ft so your sled gets hung up or needs guiding/tipped over you could be walking back a fair way then start again unless you have long arms.

Winching is like making compressed air " you need things spinning around all the time to get anywhere" lol

Virtually all winches now come with a pair of bluetooth remotes as standard (and you can retrofit them to old stuff like my 30yr+ Warn in the attached pictures) - makes the winching much easier and safer now. A couple of none-quad pictures from de-wedging my dS out of a set of tank ruts last month - had to do an unconventional pull on the wheel to get access to the vehicle's main tow point but I took it steady and as it was on wet chalk with running water it slid fairly easily until I could get to the recovery point.

Thought about going old school Colin?

I've a bit of ground with heart-breaking uphill recovery through clearfell and have put together a kitbag with ropes, straps and cheap petzl pulleys.

Fitted 2 winches in this Noot-Boom extending section artic trailer for Peter 1 12ton the pull off winch 6ton
fitted a hydraulic unit on that ridged (also rebuilt the cab with second hand B post and roof corner) then he had the art work done
Put back and front winches in the 3 landys and 2 other artic trailers
Built a few recovery transits with winches
Then the most handy winch to date Peter is the non blue tooth hand mangle.

I recently fitted a Rhino 3000kg to the front of my KLF. Simplicity itself, although I did need to fit a mounting plate. Easy enough though. You might struggle with 100m though? I think mine holds around 10m of 5mm steel cable. You'd maybe get more on the same drum with synthetic rope though 🤔

And if you have oversize tyres on the front you may find it fouls. Mine did, so I had to revert to stock sizes

Do the extraction in stages, rewinding the winch to its capacity and a decent rope with 20m loops any distance can be achieved within the length of the rope.

Yes as far as I'm aware these winches are not designed to pull over distances you can easily burn the motor out
That's why I bought a capstan.
However if you use the winch to drag the beast to a safe place where you can deal with it and then extract it

Regards Gary

Most quad batteries and rectifiers (no alternator on most) are very small capacity and without a split charge dedicated larger battery I doubt this will work well under decent loads. Like others have suggested, a petrol capstan winch is probably the best solution if a 100m static line/snatch block quad pull is not possible and after much sucking of teeth, that's just what I have done as there seems to be a surplus of PCW3000 around at present at good prices.

Tirfor takes some beating and has got me out of many a fix. I've worked these alongside powered winches on side slopes or to get it back on its wheels i.e. engine can't be run due to oil movement.

Certainly saves on gym membership

Anyone want to buy a Fairey pto winch complete for a landrover 90/110 ?
Ex- Electricity board or something similar.

This is absolutely complete and includes all shafts, support mountings, swivel bearings, LT230 gearbox output drive unit, internal stick etc etc.
I have known this winch for over 30 years and it has done some real work, often pulling x2 landrovers together. It was left to me when the previous owner passed away, but as I no longer have a landrover ( yes, I've come to my senses) I really don't have a use for it so it's just been sat inside the garage dry stored for the last few years.
Comes complete with 270yds of steel cable IIRC.

£600

Happy to listen to offers or items in px.

That's the stuff! Dyneema. Damned if I could remember the name! I plan to swap mine out as it's already started to kink in places.

Another thing I did was to fit an isolator switch to the battery feed. As the winch runs off a handlebar switch or remote control I didn't want to risk it accidentally running and either causing a jam or a tangle
Slightly off topic but Dyneema is used for strings on power kits and is VERY strong.
