Question re getting a carcass into a Navara!

I’ve just bought a navara as I’ll be doing a fair bit of red stalking soon. The only thing is that the tail gate doesn’t fold flat against the back of the truck. I was thinking of installing a small winch at the cab end of the truck bed. My plan was to pay the carcass in a large plastic tub I currently use for roe etc and then with some of ramp winch the whole thing back into the truck. I’ve read that simply lifting the deer on the tail gate can put too much pressure on the hinges And probably my back! Last time I shot a big hind I had help getting it into my previous vehicle. Anyway, just wondered what other folks do?

I've still got this for sale, if it would suit? Open to sensible offers.

See my post here:

Most of the newer ones of this type of tow-bar hoist swivel through 360 degrees so once gralloched, you should be able to drop it into your carcass tray in the back of your tuck/tailgate.

Here you go. I have managed to winch 4 large reds into the back of mine at a time.

50mm steel box section, bolted at 4 places onto the cargo ties. It is very solid and I even managed to winched the truck out a ditch on it when I lost it on a snowy morning.

Best thing is that it makes very little difference to the buck capacity and you can winch one on top of another.

I either use a sled or normally use a piece of OSB board to winch the deer up onto the buck. The board then just lays flat when not in use.

Thanks. How do you solve the non folding tailgate issue with this set up? Do you use some form of ramp?

check out the last picture, it’s an aluminium folding ramp off eBay.

TBH, you can unclip the tailgate on the Navara but all that happens then is you spend your time swearing because you just keep smacking your shin on the tow ball.

oh yeah, and my advice is get a decent winch with Dyneema rope, not wire.

Any use?

But these days I use my capstan winch and ply wood ramp

For big game animals, I lay a tarp in the bed of my truck, skin and quarter the animals in the field and throw them on the tarp. Can manage any large animals solo this way.

I use a Motocross bike ramp for mine. They are light and fold. Rated for 200kg. I can stand and jump on it. Plasters bath slides up it. It's not going to be as good as a winch or hoist. But it's ok for me as an able bodied Person. Mine was on sale at about £26.

I was looking at a Stretton hoist myself which seems a good tool, possibly a bit of a pain to store in the vehicle, however I have just bought an old ex FC winch and bracket off a friend, yet to install it however looking at the local FE rangers setup they seem to fix to wheel arches. I will be investigating further to see if this is the only fixing point. If anyone has any other thoughts on the matter please shout up. This is essentially the same as my setup.2117BD25-0A62-4CA0-8078-25B5F4FFBE07.webp265752D5-1B92-45C1-85D7-684641BF97B7.webp1D6B124F-1C59-4F65-B9DF-C8E9738AC7A2.webp

I use a nav , carcass hoist is perfect and quick to assemble etc.
Deals with 150kg pigs with ease

Similar to BigPat with my L200. I use a couple of motorbike ramps to which I’ve screwed some castors to load them so can winch the Reds straight in on the sled.
